No. 12 Field Hockey Stunned by Rowan in Overtime, 3-2

Profs Score Late in Regulation, Early in Extra Period

Montclair, NJ – Junior midfielder Marisa Marini scored 1:34 into overtime as Rowan University stunned No. 12 Montclair State with a 3-2 victory at Sprague Field on Saturday evening.

Sam Browne and Karlee Henderson each collected goals for the Profs (12-3, 5-0 NJAC), who remained tied with The College of New Jersey for the top spot in the NJAC standings with the come-from-behind win.

Senior ABBY ERLER had a goal and assist for the Red Hawks (12-4, 3-2 NJAC), who came within seconds of picking up a key NJAC victory.

DANIELLE BUTRICO put Montclair State in front with her seventh goal of the season. MEGHAN WEISS fed the ball back into the circle to Erler who moved in along the right side before getting off a shot that was redirected in by Butrico with 24:37 remaining in the contest.

Montclair then got a tremendous performance from goalkeeper REBECCA BRATTOLE, who made a career-best 19 saves on the evening, including 11 in the second half. She came up with stops on three straight shots by the Profs after the go-ahead score and then made her biggest save with 7:49 left stopping Kellie Campbell on a penalty stroke.

Trailing by a goal late in the game, the Profs made one last push getting down inside the circle in the closing seconds. Henderson drove in from the left side and put a shot on goal that clipped off a defender's stick with seven seconds left.

In the 7-on-7 overtime period, the Profs quickly gained a penalty corner. Campbell inserted the ball to the top of the circle to Emily Bucher who then slid a pass to the left side for Marini. Marini ripped a shot into the back of the cage for the game-winning goal.

Rowan struck first at the 12:16 mark as Browne scored her team-leading 17th goal of the season. Off a penalty corner, Marini fired a shot that was kicked away by Brattole. However the ball bounced into the air and Browne was able to knock it in the goal and a 1-0 Rowan lead.

The Red Hawks tied the game six minutes later with a penalty corner goal of their own. Erler took the insert along the right side and got off a shot the was initially blocked. She alertly picked up the carom and blasted a shot inside the left post for her sixth of the year with 16:02 remaining in the first half.

Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday, October 28 as it travels to Mahwah, NJ to face Ramapo College at 3:30 pm.
