HAYLEY MERRILL posted a match-high 13 kills as Montclair State knocked off Manhattanville College, in four sets on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore
MELISSA TERPSTRA added eight kills and 20 digs as the Red Hawks (21-7) took the first two sets from the Valiants 25-13, 25-10 before the hosts won the third 25-20. MSU closed out the match with a 25-16 win in the fourth.
Merrill and
COURTNEY MATLOCK had three kills apiece in the opening set as Montclair snapped a 4-4 tie with 12 of the next 15 points for a 16-7 lead on the final of four straight attack errors by Manhattanville. Merrill collected a kill and
ELISE BRACKETT served up two straight aces before a kill by Matlock made the score 21-11.
ANGELA CAMPO added an ace to bring MSU to set point and set up Terpstra for the final kill as Montclair grabbed the 1-0 lead in the match.
LILY SCANZILLO served seven straight points, including a pair of aces as Montclair raced out to a 10-3 lead.
REBECCA MATASKER recorded an ace to extend the lead to 17-7 and a kill by Terpstra followed by a kill from
COURTNEY LEPORE made it 22-9 in face of Montclair.
ERIKA GERNER added an ace before LePore added two more kills, the last one for the final point in the 25-10 victory.
After dropping the third set, the Red Hawks were locked in an 11-1 tie in the fourth when Samanthz Szura recorded an ace which was followed by a block from Merrill and
MADISON MAUTE for a 13-11 Montclair advantage. The Valiants briefly took the lead before Montclair ripped off 10 straight points, including three consecutive kills by Merrill for a 24-15 lead on Terpstra's eight and final kill of the match. An attack error kept Manhattanville alive however Merrill hammered home the final point for the victory.
Campo finished with 33 assists with Scanzillo registering seven aces and 17 digs.
The Red Hawks are back in action on Tuesday, October 28 when it hosts New Jersey City University at the Panzer Athletic Center. It will be the final conference contest for MSU which is currently 4-3 in league play. Montclair will also honor its two seniors – Campo and Gerner.
