Late Goal by Rutgers-Newark Snaps Men's Soccer Winning Streak, 2-1

Red Hawks Head to NJAC Tournament

Newark, NJ – Rutgers-Newark's Cigozie Atubi scored off a loose ball on the left side with 20 seconds remaining as the Scarlet Raiders snapped Montclair State's 11-game winning streak with a 2-1 victory at Alumni Field on Wednesday evening.

LUCAS TERCI had a goal for the Red Hawks (15-4), who fell for the first time since a 3-1 setback against top-ranked Messiah College on September 20. MSU finished 8-1 in the NJAC and will be the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament. Montclair has a first-round bye and will host the Kean/Richard Stockton winner at home on Tuesday, November 4 at 7:00 pm.

The Scarlet Raiders (15-4, 7-2 NJAC), who locked up the No. 2 seed in the NJAC Tournament with the win, took a 1-0 lead 12 seconds shy of the 11 minute mark of the first half. Zakaria Sodki crossed a ball into the left side to Charlie O'Connell who headed the ball over goalkeeper MICHAEL GONZALEZ for a 1-0 Rutgers-Newark lead.

It was a lead that would hold up the 58:05 mark when Terci converted a penalty kick for his 12th goal of the season tying the game at 1-1.

Montclair's KEVIN LYNCH and Rutgers-Newark's Matt Broomall each made saves over the next 31 minutes until Atubi untied the score with his third goal of the year.

Lynch made four saves for Montclair State which matched Rutgers-Newark in shots with 11.
