Montclair, NJ - Freshman attack
Aviana Paraggio (Sewell, NJ, Washington Township) scored four times in her collegiate debut while senior
Kelly Schoneveld (Denville, NJ, Morris Knolls) added three goals and two assists as Montclair State rolled past Drew University 16-6 in the season opener for both teams on Thursday afternoon.
Junior
Jenna Bussiere (Dayton, NJ, South Brunswick) had three goals for the Red Hawks, who posted their third straight win over Drew while cutting their deficit in the series to 8-6.
The Red Hawks wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Bussiere scored 57 seconds into the contest for an early lead that grew to 2-0 less than half a minute later when Schoneveld scored unassisted. Sophomore
Nicole Francis (Toms River, NJ, Toms River North) extended the lead to three goals with 21:14 left before the Rangers answered with a goal by Nikki Kleiman (Cranford, NJ / Cranford).
Schoneveld countered with a goal 15 seconds later and after a goal by Drew's Charlotte Brown (Rumford, RI / St. Mary Academy Bay View), Bussiere scored her second and Paraggio netted her first collegiate tally with 7:37 left putting Montclair State up 6-2.
Kleiman and Krysta Cento (Garden City, NY / Garden City) each scored once for Drew allowing the Rangers to pull within 6-4 however Paraggio scored with 52 seconds remaining before halftime as the Red Hawks led 7-4 at the break.
The score started a seven-goal run by Montclair State which built a 13-4 lead. Paraggio opened the scoring spree with her third goal and
Vanessa Rey (Toms River, NJ, Toms River North) tallied twice before setting up
Francesca Verrone (Flanders, NJ, Mount Olive) for the final score with 12:57 to go.
Drew would score twice more cutting the lead to 13-6 however MSU netted the last three goals for the final margin.
Francis finished with two goals while
Tierney Conlon (Caldwell, NJ, Caldwell) added a goal and assist. Busserie had five draws with Francis and
Kasey Maguire (Marlton, NJ, Cherokee) getting four and three respectively as Montclair State won 16 of the 24 draws in the contest. Schoneveld and
Krissa Henderson (Landing, NJ, Roxbury) had four ground balls apiece.
Freshman goalkeeper
Alexandra Tepper (Flanders, NJ, Mount Olive) stopped nine shots and added three ground balls in her debut for the Red Hawks.
Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, March 1 as the Red Hawks travel to Hoboken, NJ to face Stevens at 11:00 am.
