Men's Basketball Pulls Away from Ramapo as Red Hawks Extend Winning Streak to Three, 74-61

D'Angelo 16 Points Off the Bench, Goldson Double-Double Help MSU Stop Roadrunners

Montclair, NJ – Junior guard James D'Angelo (Long Valley, NJ, West Morris Central) scored seven of his 16-second half points during a decisive 14-4 run as Montclair State won its third straight game knocking off Ramapo College, 74-61 at the Panzer Athletic Center on Thursday evening.

Senior guard Daniel Singleton (Neptune, NJ, Neptune) finished with 23 points while senior Ordel Goldson (Hackettstown, NJ, Warren Hills) added a double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds as Montclair (9-11, 6-8 NJAC) snapped a three-game losing streak to the Roadrunners (9-12, 6-8 NJAC), including a 93-84 setback in December

MSU also moved into a tie for fifth place in the NJAC with Ramapo and New Jersey City with four games remaining as the three teams battle for a spot in the conference tournament.

Senior guard Terry Hicks (Neptune, NJ / Neptune) had 23 for Ramapo, which had its two-game winning streak snapped with the loss.

Montclair State led 27-25 at the half but saw the Roadrunners tie the game at 37-37 on a Hicks three-point field goal with 15:43 to play. After a series of misses by both teams over the next minute-plus, the Red Hawks would take the lead at D'Angelo drained a pair of technical free throws and followed that with a three-pointer for a 42-37 lead with 13:48 to go. D'Angelo's jumper on the next Montclair possession widened the lead to 44-37 however Hicks put in a layup to get the Roadrunner back to 44-41.

Sophomore guard Angel Gonzalez (Ocala, FL, Meadowbrook Academy) drilled a clutch three-pointer with Goldson and D'Angelo each adding baskets for a 51-41 Montclair State advantage with 10:58 left. The lead would be cut in half as Hicks connected on a three with 7:38 to play making the score 55-50 however Montclair would score 10 of the next 12 points, four by Singleton extending the lead to 65-52 with 4:34 left.

The Roadrunners would get within 67-59 with 2:34 showing however D'Angelo, who also added five assists, connected on 7-of-8 from the charity stripe down the stretch finishing 9-of-10 from the line for the game.

Singleton, who also grabbed seven rebounds, scored 11 of his 23 points in the first half, including five straight that snapped a 13-13 tie midway through the period. Goldson registered his seventh double-double of the season.  Chris Torres (Oakland, NJ, Indian Hills) pulled down seven boards for MSU, which committed just six turnovers in the contest.

Elvonney Poole (Bayonne, NJ / Bayonne) posted 13 points and 11 rebounds with Frank Nock (Bridgeton, Nj / Bridgeton) netting 16 points which included a 10-for-10 performance from the foul line.

Both teams will have one day in between their next NJAC contests on Saturday, February 8. Montclair State heads to Richard Stockton for a 3:00 pm matchup with the Ospreys while Ramapo is down in Glassboro to face Rowan University at 8:00 pm.
