Hoboken, NJ – Junior attack
Tierney Conlon (Caldwell, NJ, Caldwell) scored four times and assisted on two other goals as Montclair State picked up its second straight win knocking off Stevens, 12-10 at DeBaun Field on Saturday morning.
Junior
Jenna Bussiere (Dayton, NJ, South Brunswick) had three goals while
Kasey Maguire (Marlton, NJ, Cherokee) and
Aviana Paraggio (Sewell, NJ, Washington Township) added two apiece for the Red Hawks. Montclair, off to a 2-0 start for the second straight year, registered its second consecutive win over the Ducks (1-2) cutting its deficit in the series to 9-6.
The Red Hawks trailed 4-2 with 20:32 left in the first half before scoring three of the last four goals of the period. Maguire cut the lead to one with an unassisted tally and Bussiere collected her second with 6:13 to go tying the game at 4-4. Stevens would regain the lead two minutes later however Conlon's second goal with 3:46 to play forged a 5-5 deadlock at halftime.
Kelly Schoneveld (Denville, NJ, Morris Knolls) put Montclair State on top early in the second half finishing a feed from Conlon however the Ducks tied the game with 24:53 left on Caitlyn Hughes' second goal of the contest. The Red Hawks answered immediately as Conlon scored 28 seconds later and a goal by Paraggio gave MSU an 8-6 advantage with 20:33 left.
Stevens drew within 8-7 with just under 19 minutes to play however the Red Hawks scored the next four goals over a 10-minute span. Paraggio registered her second with 17:32 left and Conlon set up Maguire for a goal with 11:07 remaining for a 10-7 lead. Bussiere converted a free-position attempt for a four-goal advantage before Conlon's fourth goal with 7:53 to go put Montclair State in front 12-7.
Stevens would make one last run scoring three times, the final one coming with 1:47 as Mackenzie Swartout scored the second of her two goals. The Ducks would win the ensuing draw control but goalkeeper
Alexandra Tepper (Flanders, NJ, Mount Olive) came up with a save that all but ended any Stevens comeback bid.
Maguire finished with two goals while
Vanessa Rey (Toms River, NJ, Toms River North) picked up a pair of assists. Tepper stopped 12 shots for MSU, which was out shot in the game 27-22. Bussiere had four draws and three ground balls while Schoneveld registered a team-best four ground balls.
Krissa Henderson (Landing, NJ, Roxbury) and
Meredith King (Caldwell, NJ, James Caldwell) each forced a pair of turnovers.
Montclair State is home on Wednesday, March 5 as it hosts Thiel College at Sprague Field beginning at 4:00 pm.
