Port Charlotte, FL – Sophomore Christian Herstine (Beaver, PA / Beaver Area) tossed the 21st no-hitter in the history of Marietta College baseball as the 10th-ranked Pioneers blanked Montclair State 8-0 in the Snowbird Classic on Thursday afternoon.
Junior Christian Demko (Xenia, OH / Bellbrook) drove in the three runs for Marietta (5-1) which turned the tables of the MSU after Montclair registered a 5-4 come-from-behind victory on Monday.
The Red Hawks, who have lost two straight, fell to 3-5.
Herstine (2-0) faced two batters over the minimum as he struck out nine and walked three batters in his 101-pitch performance. He set down the first nine Red Hawks in order before issuing a walk to freshman
Ryan Long (Washington Township, NJ, Washington Township) to open the fourth inning. Long would be erased on a double-play and after another walk to
Cody Pace (Milltown, NJ, Spotswood), Herstine induced a ground out to end the inning.
Herstine would allow a walk to
Nicholas Martins (Linden, NJ, Linden) with one out in the fifth before beginning a streak of 15 in a row to end the game.
Meanwhile the Pioneers did all the scoring they would need in the first three innings as it scored twice in the first, three times in the second and once in the third building a 6-0 advantage.
Josh Felix (Elizabeth, NJ, Elizabeth) took the loss for Montclair State. He allowed six runs and two hits (four earned) in 2 1/3 innings.
Louis Pimpinella (Hillsdale, NJ, Pascack Valley) went 4 1/3 innings allowing two runs on six hits with
Donald Cusick (Wayne, NJ, Wayne Valley) striking out two in his one inning of relief.
Montclair State concludes it Snowbird Classic appearance on Friday, March 14 at 11:00 am against The College of Wooster.
