No. 2 Softball Powers Past Hiram and Simpson to Close Out Rebel Spring Games

Red Hawks Blast Six Home Runs, Finish 7-1 on Florida Trip

Auburndale, FL – The Montclair State softball closed out their Rebel Spring Game appearance with a flourish as the No. 2 Red Hawks belted six home runs en route to wins over Hiram College and Simpson College on Friday.

Brooke Powers (Newton, NJ, Pope John XXIII), Dana Amato (Hillsdale, NJ, Pascack Valley) and Alex Hill (Parsippany, NJ, Parsippany Hills) each hit homers in a 12-3 win against Hiram while Melissa Rustemeyer (Colonia, NJ, Colonia) and Tara Petrucelli (Nutley, NJ, Nutley) had one apiece in a 6-1 victory against Simpson. The Red Hawks finished 7-1 in Florida.

The MSU bats were out in full force in the win against Hiram as Montclair scored a season-best 12 runs and collected 14 hits. Powers went 3-for-4 and scored four times while Hill, who also picked up the victory in the circle, went 4-fo-5 at the plate. Amato, freshman Lauren Guillen (Secaucus, NJ, Secaucus) and sophomore Jaclyn Allegretta (Hackensack, NJ, Hackensack) each had two hits for Montclair State.

Scoreless through the first two innings, Montclair State scored four times in the third as Guillen doubled in Powers, who led off with an infield single, for the game's first run. Senior catcher Alisha Cumberton (Toms River, NJ, Toms River East) added an RBI single and a fielding error allowed two more to score giving MSU a 4-0 advantage.

Powers and Hill provided the two runs in the fourth with solo homers for a six-run lead and, after Hiram got a run back, Guillen doubled in two and later scored on a wild pitch as the lead grew to 9-1. Amato provided the final three runs with her second home run of the year, a three-run shot in the top of the seventh.

Hill got the win improving to 5-1 as she allowed two hits, struck out eight and did not walk a batter. Powers finished up recording the final five outs.

Amato gave Montclair State a 1-0 lead in the game with Simpson driving in Allegretta from second with a base hit back through the middle. Simpson tied the game in the top of the fourth however Montclair immediately answered in its half as Rustemeyer led off the inning with a solo shot. Allegretta added an RBI single and Powers followed with a run-scoring hit giving the Red Hawks a 4-1 lead.

Petrucelli blasted a two-run home run the following inning for the five-run advantage.

The rest of the game was left up to Hill (6-1), who allowed just four hits, struck out 14 and did not walk a batter as she raised her season strikeout total 81 while pushing her career mark to 1,031 which is now 12th all-time in NCAA Division III history. She became the 15th player to reach 1,000 career punch outs on Thursday.

Alison Cullen (Branchburg, NJ, Immaculata) and Allegretta had two hits each for Montclair State.

MSU is now off until Thursday, March 20 when it travels to Center Valley, PA to face DeSales University at 3:00 pm.
