Montclair, NJ – Junior midfielder
Jenna Bussiere (Dayton, NJ, South Brunswick) scored six goals and collected an assist while senior midfielder
Kelly Schoneveld (Denville, NJ, Morris Knolls) added four goals as Montclair State remained unbeaten with a 15-13 victory over previously undefeated Farmingdale State at Sprague Field on Thursday evening.
Junior attack
Tierney Conlon (Caldwell, NJ, Caldwell) recorded three goals and three assists as the Red Hawks squandered a four-goal lead in the second half before rebounding for the two goal victory against their former conference rival. Montclair's 7-0 start is one victory shy of the best start in program history. The Red Hawks opened the 2004 campaign with eight consecutive wins.
Junior midfielder Nicole Marzocca (North Babylon, NY / North Babylon) scored five and registered four assists for the Rams, who fell to 6-1 on the season.
Montclair State, which never trailed in the contest, led 10-7 at halftime and took a 12-8 lead when Conlon scored unassisted with 20:18 left. But the Rams battled back with the next four goals tying the contest at 12-12. Alyssa Handel (Medford, NY / Patchogue-Medford) got the scoring run going with 17:30 left with Marzocca setting up goals by Christy Thoden (Bayport, NY / Bayport-Blue Point) and Brittany Rosino (North Babylon, NY / North Babylon) bringing Farmingdale within 12-11 with 15:27 to go. Marzocca tied the game with 13:55 to play with her fourth of the contest.
Bussiere gave MSU the lead back 43 seconds later however Marzocca tied the game for the fifth time with 13:08 left.
Montclair had a chance to regain the lead with 10:42 to go as Bussiere was given a free-position attempt. She appeared to score but the goal was waved off and a yellow card on the play put MSU a player down. The Red Hawks would immediately get the ball back off a failed clear and ran time off the clock before Conlon found
Kara Crampton (Kinnelon, NJ, Kinnelon) in front with 8:20 left putting MSU back in front 14-13.
Sophomore
Kasey Maguire (Marlton, NJ, Cherokee) collected the ensuing draw control and Montclair took advantage of the possession with Bussiere feeding Conlon on the doorstep with 6:54 left for the two-goal Red Hawk lead.
Marzocca got the next draw for Famringdale State but Kelly Geheran (Sayville, NY / Connetquot) was stripped of the ball by
Krissa Henderson (Landing, NJ, Roxbury) turning the ball back over to the Red Hawks with 6:20 left. MSU possessed the ball for the next two-plus minutes before turning it over but the Rams gave it right back with 3:54 to play. Montclair was able to run out the remaining time for its ninth win over the Famringdale State in 13 meetings.
Bussiere added five draws and two ground balls while Schoneveld had three draws and a pair of ground balls.
Nicole Francis (Toms River, NJ, Toms River North) and Henderson led the Red Hawks with five ground balls apiece. Sophomore goalkeeper
Alexandra Tepper (Flanders, NJ, Mount Olive) stopped seven shots.
Marzocca had three draw and two ground balls to complete her evening with Thoden adding the same. Freshman goalkeeper Krista Spagnoletta (West Islip, NY / West Islip) posted nine saves.
Wednesday's contest marked the first meeting between the two teams as non-conference foes after eight years together as members of the Skyline Conference. MSU, which now plays in the NJAC exclusively, fell to the Rams during the regular season in both 2012 and 2013 but came back to win the Skyline Conference Championship Game each year including a 16-13 win last May.
Montclair State is off until Tuesday, March 25 when it hosts New Paltz at Sprague Field beginning at 7:00 pm. Farmingdale State stays on the road for its Skyline Conference opener at Purchase College on Saturday, March 22 at 1:00 pm.
