Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Conlon's Milestone Night Helps Women's Lacrosse Beat New Paltz, 19-11; Red Hawks Now 8-0

Junior Scores Nine Times, Records 300th Career Point

Montclair, NJ – Junior attack Tierney Conlon (Caldwell, NJ, Caldwell) scored nine goals and reached a milestone with her 300th career point as Montclair State bounced back from an early deficit to remain unbeaten with a 19-11 victory over previously undefeated New Paltz at Sprague Field on Tuesday evening.

Senior midfielder Kelly Schoneveld (Denville, NJ, Morris Knolls) had five goals and an assist as the Red Hawks improved to 8-0, matching the best start in program history. Montclair, which tied the start of the 2004 team, also won its second "battle of the unbeatens" in less than a week as MSU knocked off Farmingdale State 15-13 last Thursday.

Junior midfielder Carissa Citro and junior attack Kelsey Healy (Central Islip, NY / Bay Shore) had four goals apiece for the Hawks, who led by four goals early in the game before being outscored 18-6 over the final 40 minutes.

The game was the first meeting between the two teams since an 18-6 win by Montclair State on March 22, 2001. The Red Hawks have now won all five contests.

Conlon, one of Division III's top assists players the last two years, turned into a goal scorer for MSU as her nine goals were the most recorded in a game by an MSU player since Jodi Gangemi had nine against Eastern University in 2003 and just two shy of the MSU single-game record.

Conlon, who had two assists in her 11-point evening, set up the first goal of the game 29 seconds in setting up a goal by Kasey Maguire (Marlton, NJ, Cherokee).

New Paltz countered with five straight goals, the first two by Healy. Cirtro added a goal and scores from Talia Tesler (Rochester, NY / Brighton) and Lianne Valdivia (Kingston, NY / Kingston) gave the visiting Hawks a 5-1 advantage.

Conlon would help bring the Red Hawks back from the deficit with a hand in each of the next five MSU goals. She set up Schoneveld with 19:07 left and scored twice in a 45-second span bringing the Red Hawks within 5-4. After Valdivia answered for New Paltz, Conlon tallied twice more tying the game at 6-6 with 11:21 left.

Healy's third goal put the Hawks back in front, however Conlon scored again and Maguire had an unassisted tally pushing MSU into the lead at 8-7 with 5:49 to go before halftime. Citro knotted the game up two minutes later however Schoneveld scored three times inside the final 3:19, the last coming with 29 seconds left giving the Red Hawks an 11-8 cushion at the break.

Freshman midfielder Francesca Verrone (Flanders, NJ, Mount Olive) converted a free-position attempt to open the second and scored again with 17:44 left as MSU widened its lead to 13-8. Conlon a minute later and her seventh goal of the game off a free-position attempt with 14:59 remaining gave MSU a 15-8 advantage.

It would be the milestone score for Conlon as she became the third player in program history to record 300 career points joining Cathy Homiek (342 from 2001-04) and Brianna Gillin (312 from 2004-07) as the only players to hold that distinction.

The teams would trade the next six goals before Verrone netted her third of the game with 1:40 to go for the final margin.

Conlon added five draws while Schoneveld had four along with two ground balls. Maguire posted three draws and four ground balls while NJAC Defensive Player of the Week Krissa Henderson (Landing, NJ, Roxbury) collected two draws, four ground balls and a caused turnover. Sophomore goalkeeper Alexandra Tepper (Flanders, NJ, Mount Olive) stopped 10 shots for MSU, which outshot New Paltz, 36-28 while converting 5-of-7 free-position chances.

Junior goalkeeper Jackie Ulanoff (Northport, NY / Northport) had 12 saves for New Paltz, which was 0-for-6 on free-position attempts. Julia Johnson (Bayport, NY / Bayport-Blue Point) had three draws, two ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.

Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, March 29 with an 11:00 am contest in Madison, NJ versus FDU-Florham.
