Brett Mangan (Maplewood, NJ, Columbia) scored five times and added two assists and No. 10 Montclair State scored all seven first-period goals in a 19-9 win over Curry College (MA) on Saturday afternoon.
Alex Hahn (Hackettstown, NJ, Pope John XXIII) scored three times with
Griffin Woodfinlevine (Morristown, NJ, Morristown) and
Steve Danyluk (Raritan, NJ, Bridgewater-Raritan) each added two for the Red Hawks, who bounced back from their first loss of the year on Wednesday. Montclair is now 7-1.
Mangan scored the first two goals of the game staking MSU to a 2-0 lead in the first 2:33 of the game before
Joel Van Der Wal (Columbia, NJ, North Warren)scored 42 seconds after Mangan for a three-goal advantage. Danyluk collected the first of his two goals with 10:32 to play with
Sam Morrissey (Hackettstown, NJ, West Morris Central) and Mangan scored less than a minute apart as Montclair State led 6-0. Danyluk capped off the first period with his second goal with 3:27 remaining.
Montclair kept the scoring going in the second as it extended the scoring run to 11-0.
Jake Haimson (Montville, NJ, Montville) scored the first goal and
Connor Cunningham (Jackson, NJ, Jackson Memorial) had an unassisted marker with 9:29 to go. Woodfinlevine scored his first 59 seconds later and a goal by
Dylan Heningburg (Maplewood, NJ, Columbia) pushed the lead to 11 goals with 6:40 to go before halftime.
The Red Hawks led 12-2 at the break.
Morrissey finished with a goal and three assists with Don Finn adding two helpers. Eleven different players scored at least one goal for MSU, which outshot Curry (5-3), 44-23 in the game.
Blase Mantineo (Flemington, NJ, Hunterdon Central) was 12-of-15 on faceoffs with nine ground balls for MSU with
Brad Pietrucha (Bridgewater, NJ, Bridgewater-Raritan) registering eight faceoff victories and five ground balls.
Montclair State is now off until Saturday, March 29 when it opens Skyline Conference play at home against Mt. St. Mary at 1:00 pm. The Red Hawks, the five-time defending league champion, will also honor their 1989 undefeated team at halftime of the game.
