Baseball Pitching Carries Red Hawks to Weekend Sweep of SUNY Oneonta, 4-2

Montclair Tops Red Dragons for Second Consecutive Game

Union, NJ – For the second consecutive day the Montclair State baseball allowed a run in the first inning and then shut down SUNY Oneonta for the final eight as the Red Hawks swept their weekend series from the Red Dragons with a 4-2 win at Kean University's Jim Hynes Stadium on Sunday.

The Red Hawks won their second straight game and upped their record 5-6 as senior Lou Martini (Flemington, NJ, North Hunterdon), junior Christopher Reynolds (Randolph, NJ, Randolph) and senior Jayson Stolz (Iselin, NJ, John F. Kennedy) each drove in a run to back the solid pitching performances from lefthanders Dylan Papa (South Plainfield, NJ, South Plainfield), Michael Macchia (Middletown, NJ, Middletown North) and John Silvestri (Livingston, NJ, Seton Hall Prep).

Oneonta grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as David Wright (Oneonta, NY / Oneonta) and Matt Mastroianni (Somers, NY / North Salem) collected back-to-back one-out singles with both coming around to score when Chris Orlando (Putnam Valley, NY / Putnam Valley) laced a double down the left field line.

But that would be all the scoring the Red Dragons would get as Papa settled down after the first inning. He gave up a pair of singles in the second inning and had runners on second and third with one out before inducing an inning-ending double play. It was the start of 10 straight batters retired by Papa who turned the ball over to Macchia. The sophomore struck out five batters in his three innings of scoreless relief.

Silvestri came on in the ninth battled out of a little trouble to pick up his second save of the season. Papa (1-2) allowed five hits, struck out seven and did not walk a batter. Junior righthander Alex Mastrianni (Valatie, NY / Ichabod Crane) took the loss for Oneonta (4-10). Mastrianni (0-5) gave up four runs and six hits in seven innings. He fanned six and issued two walks.

After falling behind by two runs, Montclair got one back in its half of the first as freshman Ryan Long (Washington Township, NJ, Washington Township) reached on an error and scored with two outs off another Red Dragon miscue cutting the deficit to 2-1. Long would also factor in the next MSU run leading off the third with a base hit. He went to second on a ground out and then executed a double steal with Cody Pace (Milltown, NJ, Spotswood) putting runners at second and third. The heads-up baserunning paid off when Reynolds grounded out on the right side of the infield scoring Long knotting the contest at 2-2.

MSU took the lead the next inning using it aggressive baserunning again. P.J. Jennings (Morris Plains, NJ, Morristown) walked to open the inning and Juan Perdomo Jr. (South Brunswick, NJ, South Brunswick) singled putting runners on first and second. A fielder's choice by Mike Tolerico (Wayne, NJ, Wayne Valley) left runners at the corners. Tolerico then took off from first forcing shortstop Orlando to cover second base. Stolz bounced a ball perfectly to the vacated left side which went for an infield single sending Jennings home with the go-ahead run.

The Red Hawks added an insurance run in the sixth inning on a two-out RBI double by Martini scoring Long, who reached on a hit by pitch and stole second.

Perdomo finished with two hits for MSU, which outhit the Red Dragons, 7-6.

Montclair State is scheduled to be in action on Tuesday, March 25 as it travels to Center Valley, PA to face DeSales University at 3:30 pm.
