Port Charlotte, FL – Sophomore Kyle Fluharty allowed two hits and one unearned run in an eight inning performance, lifting Heidelberg University to an 8-2 victory over Montclair State in the Snowbird Classic on Sunday.
Fluharty struck out four and walked three, retirinh 15 straight batters as the Student Princes (7-2) extended their winning streak to seven games.
In the bottom of the first, the Heidelberg offense gave Fluharty a four-run lead. Joe Staab drew a lead-off walk and moved to second when Eric Monroe was hit by a pitch. With one out, designated hitter Austin Fleming set a fly ball to right which was mishandled, allowing Heidelberg to load the bases.
Alex Grove followed with a line drive single to centerfield, scoring Staab. The next batter, Derek Hug, sent a bouncer to shortstop. After Grove was forced at second, Hug narrowly beat the relay throw to first, which extended the inning. Trevor Oldham laced a two-run double to left center, plating Monroe and Hug.
Fluharty worked out of a jam in the top of the second. With one out, Montclair State recorded back-to-back singles by
Anderson Rosa (Perth Amboy, NJ, Perth Amboy) and
Cody Pace (Milltown, NJ, Spotswood).
Jason Avedissian (Wayne, NJ, Wayne Hills) sent a grounder to Monroe at first, but his throw to second for the force was wide of the bag. The error allowed Rosa to score and put runners on the corners.
With one out, shortstop Derek Hendrixson fielded a grounder and started a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
The score remained 4-1 until Heidelberg added a pair in the fifth. Alex Grove hit an RBI groundout, scoring Ameal Squibb. Hug followed with an RBI single to right, which allowed Fleming to score.
In the eighth, a pair of one-out walks gave Montclair their first baserunners since the third inning. Fluharty wriggled out of the inning by picking off
Keith Murphy (Point Pleasant, NJ, Point Pleasant Boro) at second and retiring
Matt Long (Washingtin Township, NJ, Washington Township) on a liner to the gap in right center that Oldham deftly tracked down.
The Student Princes tacked on two more runs in the bottom half of the eighth on an RBI double by Adam Hershberger and an RBI single by Staab.
Montclair State would get a run in the ninth inning as
Ivan Olivera (Elizabeth, NJ, Elizabeth) singled with one out and took second on an error by the leftfielder.
Christopher Reynolds (Randolph, NJ, Randolph) smacked a double plating Olivera.
Senior lefthander
Dylan Papa (South Plainfield, NJ, South Plainfield) took the loss for the Red Hawks falling to 0-2.
The Red Hawks (1-3) return to action in the Snowbird Classic on Monday, March 10 facing 12
th-ranked Marietta College at 12:00 pm.
