Montclair, NJ – Senior lefthander
Dylan Papa (South Plainfield, NJ, South Plainfield) tossed a four-hit shutout in the opener while
Christopher Reynolds (Randolph, NJ, Randolph),
Connor Abreu (Piscataway, NJ, Piscataway) and
Ryan Long (Washington Township, NJ, Washington Township) each drove in a pair in the second game as Montclair State swept Richard Stockton 1-0 and 9-4 in an NJAC doubleheader on Saturday.
The Red Hawks have now won three straight as it improved to 11-13 overall, 6-4 in the NJAC with the two victories. Richard Stockton fell to 14-12 overall, 6-4 in the league.
Papa (3-2) recorded his third career shutout scattering four singles with three strikeouts and a walk in his 87-pitch performance. Adam Warburton (2-2) took the loss despite a solid performance as he gave up just three hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
Papa retired the first 10 batters before allowing a single to Keith Tappert with one out in the fourth. A ground out moved the runner to third however a line out to second baseman
Lou Martini (Flemington, NJ, North Hunterdon) ended the Ospreys' threat. The lefthander would also escape a threat in the fifth as a leadoff single and sacrifice put a runner at second with one out. But Papa ended that chance on a fly out and ground out.
Stockton would get a runner on base in each of the next two innings only to see Papa come up with big out pitches to keep the Ospreys off the scoreboard.
Warburton would match Papa every step of the way until the bottom of the seven when Montclair scored the only run of the contest. Reynolds reached on a one out single and went to second as
Anderson Rosa (Perth Amboy, NJ, Perth Amboy) drew a walk.
P.J. Jennings (Morris Plains, NJ, Morristown) then singled scoring Reynolds for the 1-0 Red Hawk advantage.
Papa, who registered his sixth career complete game, retired the Ospreys in order in the eighth and gave up a one-out single to Tappert in the ninth before setting down the next two hitters, including a strike out to end the game.
In the second game, an RBI single by Martini and a run-producing out by Reynolds in the first staked MSU to a 2-0 lead. Stockton would get a run back in the second however
Philip Scott (Paulsboro, NJ, Paulsboro) singled home Reynolds in the third for a 3-1 Montclair lead.
Travis Marra brought the Ospreys within 3-2 in the sixth with an RBI single and the Ospreys took the lead in the seventh with George Eisenhart pushing across the go-ahead run with a single for a 4-3 lead.
Montclair State responded quickly in the bottom of the inning as Long drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game with Reynolds adding a sacrifice fly putting the Red Hawks back in front, 5-4. MSU added four runs in the eighth on a RBI double by
Cody Pace (Milltown, NJ, Spotswood) and a two-run single by Abreu. Long collected his second run batted in with a single that plated Abreu.
Senior lefthander
John Silvestri (Livingston, NJ, Seton Hall Prep) picked up the win in relief evening his record at 2-2. Silvestri allowed four hits and two unearned run in his 3 2/3 innings of work, striking out two. Freshman righthander
Connor Lindsay (New Egypt, NJ, New Egypt) went the first 5 1/3 giving up two runs and six hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
Abreu was 3-for-5 while Martini and Pace had two hits apiece.
Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday, April 15 as it hosts Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at Yogi Berra Stadium beginning at 3:30 pm.
