Kelly Schoneveld (Denville, NJ, Morris Knolls) scored four times while junior attack
Tierney Conlon (Caldwell, NJ, Caldwell) registered a career-best nine assists as Montclair State tied the single-season record for victories for the second straight season with a 17-5 win over Rutgers-Camden on Thursday afternoon.
Jenna Bussiere (Dayton, NJ, South Brunswick) and
Kasey Maguire (Marlton, NJ, Cherokee) had three goals apiece as the Red Hawks closed out their regular season at 15-1 overall, 5-1 in the NJAC. Montclair tied the season mark for wins set in 2006 and equaled last season.
MSU also locked up the No. 2 seed in the inaugural New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament which begins on Wednesday, April 30 with semifinal action. Montclair, the No. 2 seed, will host third-seeded Rowan at 7:00 pm in the second meeting between the teams this season. The Red Hawks recorded a 14-11 victory over the Profs in Glassboro on April 12.
Montclair State fell behind 1-0 early in the contest but quickly rebounded with the next four goals in a span of 4:42. Conlon, who had three assists in the run set up
Aviana Paraggio (Sewell, NJ, Washington Township) tying the game and found Bussiere for a goal with 25:31 to play making it 2-1. The scoring sequence duplicated giving Montclair a 4-1 advantage with 23:34 to go.
The Scarlet Raptors (5-11, 0-6 NJAC) got a goal from Holly Cusick 10 seconds later cutting the deficit back to two however the Red Hawks tallied the next nine goals for a 13-2 lead at the break. Schoneveld, who upper her career goal total in 198, got things rolling with 20:48 left with Maguire, Bussiere and
Alexa DiPiero (Cherry Hill, NJ, Cherry Hill East) each getting a goal for an 8-2 lead. Schoneveld scored three straight over the course of 2:04 extending the lead to 11-2 before Maguire and
Vanessa Rey (Toms River, NJ, Toms River North) closed out the first-half scoring for the Red Hawks.
Maguire made it a 10-goal run early in the second half and Schoneveld scored with 11:35 left off an assist from Conlon, who registered her 200
th career assist on the play. The nine helpers in the game by Conlon were the most by an MSU player since Cathy Homiek set the record with 10 against Alvernia on March 6, 2004. Conlon, who entered the game 10th in Division III in assists and third in points overall, raised her single-season point total to 109.
Serena Hitchins (Voorhees, NJ, Eastern Regional) and
Jessica Bertolino (Medford Lakes, NJ, Shawnee) each had a goal for the Red Hawks in the final five minutes.
Montclair State won 19 of the 24 draw in the contest as Bussiere, Conlon,
Francesca Verrone (Flanders, NJ, Mount Olive) and
Kara Crampton (Kinnelon, NJ, Kinnelon) each had three.
Alexandra Tepper (Flanders, NJ, Mount Olive) made two saves for MSU in the first 36:38 of the contest before giving way to
Rebecca Myers (River Edge, NJ, River Dell), who stopped one shot.
