Women's Lacrosse Keeps Winning Ways Going as Red Hawks Down Stockton in NJAC Opener, 20-9

Conlon Scores Eight, Schoneveld Six as MSU Moves to 11-0

Montclair, NJ – Junior attack Tierney Conlon (Caldwell, NJ, Caldwell) scored eight goals and added an assist while senior midfielder Kelly Schoneveld (Denville, NJ, Morris Knolls) scored six times as Montclair State kept its record unblemished with a 20-9 victory over league newcomer Richard Stockton at Sprague Field on Saturday.

Junior attack Vanessa Rey (Toms River, NJ, Toms River North) scored three goals as the Red Hawks improved to 11-0 on the year.

Junior midfielder Colleen Knight (Hammonton, NJ / Hammonton) scored three times for the Ospreys, who had their six-game winning streak snapped. Richard Stockton, playing its inaugural season, fell to 8-2 overall (0-1 NJAC).

Stockton took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Nicole Miller (Southampton, NJ / Seneca) 3:04 into the contest. Montclair State answered 23 seconds later as Jenna Bussiere (Dayton, NJ, South Brunswick) tallied a goal. Conlon followed with another less than a minute later and scored with 16:33 left giving MSU a 3-1 advantage.

Knight scored twice 17 seconds apart as the Ospreys tied the game at 3-3 with 14:39 remaining. Schoneveld would collected the next two goals putting the Red Hawks back up 5-3 but the Stockton stayed close as Carlie Flake (Manalapan, NJ / Manalapan) scored with 11:48 left cutting the MSU lead to a goal.

The Red Hawks then exploded for the final six goals of the half. Bussiere began the run with an unassisted tally with 10:59 to play and Montclair scored four times in a span of 1:31 to build a 10-4 lead. Conlon recorded an assist and tallied twice, the last coming with 5:25 to go. Aviana Paraggio (Sewell, NJ, Washington Township) and Rey also scored with Rey netting one more with 1:07 remaining as the Red Hawks led 11-4 at the break.

Schoneveld made its seven straight goals by Montclair scoring 13 seconds into the second half. Stockton's Zoey Kramer (Eatontown, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) ended the MSU run with 29:17 left however MSU scored the next four with Conlon and Schoneveld scoring two apiece extending the Red Hawks advantage to 16-5 with 25:48 left.

Sophomore Kasey Maguire (Marlton, NJ, Cherokee) posted six draws for Montclair State with Schoneveld and Kara Crampton (Kinnelon, NJ, Kinnelon) each getting three. The Red Hawks won 26 of the 30 draws contested and had 11 different players get at least one. Sophomore defender Meredith King (Caldwell, NJ, James Caldwell) had an outstanding day with three caused turnovers and game-high seven ground balls. Sophomore goalkeeper Rebecca Myers (River Edge, NJ, River Dell) stopped three shots over the final 29 minutes.

For Richard Stockton, sophomore keeper Mary Stornes (Galloway, NJ / Absegami) made 12 saves and also added five ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.

Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday, April 8 at home against Kean University in a 7:00 pm NJAC matchup at Sprague Field. Richard Stockton is also home the same evening versus Rutgers-Camden.
