Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Eight-Ranked Women's Soccer Clipped by No. 6 Johns Hopkins in Opener at Seahawk Invtational, 2-1

Red Hawks Bested by Blue Jays in Battle of Top 10 Teams

St. Mary's, MD – It was billed as a battle between two of Top 10 teams in a season opener and in the end it lived up to the hype. For Montclair State however, it came out on the wrong end of the scoreboard as the No. 8 Red Hawks fell to sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins 2-1 in the SMDHOTELS.com Seahawk Classic at St. Mary's College on Friday afternoon.

Montclair State (0-1-0), which suffered just one defeat all of last season, dropped its opening game as the Blue Jays' Sydney Teng scored with 19:16 remaining. The loss was also the first in the regular-season for MSU since a 2-0 setback against Rowan in October 2012, a span of 17 games.

With two of the better defensive teams in Division III squaring off against one another, goals would be hard to come by and chances perhaps even more difficult. The two combined for 19 total shots in the game, six in the first half and the first goal of the game would come off a bit of misfortune for Montclair State as a ball deflected off a defender and into the back of the net giving Johns Hopkins at 1-0 lead at the 15:47 mark.

The one-goal lead by JHU would carry over into the second half until Montclair tied the game in the 63rd minute on a goal by Kaila Fasano (Westwood, NJ, Westwood), who knocked in a rebound off a shot by Martina Landeka (Westfield, NJ, Westfield). The lead though would last for a little of eight minutes as Teng got the go-ahead score.

Senior goalkeeper Gina Policastro (East Brunswick, NJ, East Brunswick) made a pair of saves for MSU, which was outshot in the game, 11-8.

Montclair returns to action Saturday, August 30 when it takes on host St. Mary's at 4:00 pm.
