Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Struss, Johnston Goals in Second Half Carry No. 3 Field Hockey Past Rensselaer, 2-1

Red Hawks Off to 2-0 Start

Montclair, NJ – Freshman Kaitlyn Struss (Fairfield, NJ, West Essex) and junior Maura Johnston (Montville, NJ, Montville) scored nearly four minutes apart in the second half as third-ranked Montclair State edged Rensselaer, 2-1 at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.

Johnston also registered an assist as the Red Hawks (2-0) defeated the Engineers (0-1) for the ninth time in 10 all-time meetings.

Montclair State outshot RPI 7-2 in the first half yet neither side was able to find the back of the cage. Engineers freshman keeper Hilary Fiorentino (West Deptford, NJ / Gloucester Tech) made one save early and later stopped consecutive attempts by Struss in the 32nd minute. Meanwhile Montclair's Rebecca Brattole (Clark, NJ, Arthur L. Johnson) kept the game scoreless denying Angela Cascio (Wyndmoor, PA / Springside School) twice in the final seconds of the period.

The scoreless action continued into the second half until the 54th minute when Montclair State broke through. Off a penalty corner, sophomore Gianna Moglino (Holmdel, NJ, Holmdel) fired a shot from the right side that Fiorentino stopped with a blocker. The ball caromed to the left side to Johnston who fired a shot that got past Fiorentino toward the goal where Struss tapped it in for her third goal in two games.

It wouldn't take long for Montclair to make it 2-0 as Johnston scored her first of the season, knocking in her own rebound off an initial stop by Fiorentino at 57:06.
Five minute later, the Engineers came within inches of closing the gap to a goal as Megan Jones' (Stevensville, MD / Kent Island) tip-in attempt in front was sticked away by Brattole.

That play proved to be important as RPI would get on the board with 4:53 to play on Chloe Hutchinson's goal off a penalty corner. But that would be as close as the Engineers would get as Montclair held possession for the better part of the final four-plus minutes.

Brattole made five saves for Montclair State, which outshot RPI, 19-6 in the contest.

The Red Hawks return to action on Wednesday, September 3 when it heads out on the road at Muhlenberg College for a 7:30 pm matchup in Allentown, PA.
