No. 3 Field Hockey Suffers 1st Loss as Red Hawks Get Upended on the Road at Muhlenberg, 3-1

Butrico Scores Lone Goal for MSU

Allentown, PA – Muhlenberg College got a pair of goals from Lauren Jordan along with a pair of assists from Samantha Swire as the Mules upended No. 3 Montclair State 3-1 at Scotty Wood Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Emily Boyle provided the game-clinching goal late as Muhlenberg evened its record at 1-1.

Senior Joelle Butrico (South Plainfield, NJ, South Plainfield) had the lone goal for MSU, which suffered its first loss after opening the year with two victories this past weekend.

The Mules grabbed a 1-0 lead 6:43 into the game on Jordan's first goal. Swire drove the ball into the circle before sending it to the far post where Jordan was able to poke it in. Muhlenberg nearly added to the lead moments later however Christine Germaske was denied twice by MSU goalkeeper Rebecca Brattole (Clark, NJ, Arthur L. Johnson).

Montclair tied the game on Butrico's penalty stroke goal, her second of the season at 12:17 of the opening period.

Muhlenberg would regain the lead just under five minutes later. Brattole came up with saves on back-to-back chances by Kayleigh Thies and Germaske. However the second rebound found the stick of Jordan who flipped the carom into the far corner for a 2-1 Mules advantage. Goalkeeper Sierra Lenker kept that lead intact as she made two saves against Gianna Moglino (Holmdel, NJ, Holmdel) with 8:22 left before halftime.

In the second half, the Red Hawks would get several chances to tie the game as it was awarded eight penalty corners however it could not capitalize on any of them. Lenker stopped Danielle Butrico (South Plainfield, NJ, South Plainfield) and Kaitlyn Struss (Fairfield, NJ, West Essex) to open the period and an attempt by Danielle Butrico with 12:19 left went wide.

Muhlenberg then got an insurance goal with 3:07 left as Boyle put away a rebound in front.

Brattole finished with six saves for Montclair State, which was outshot 9-8 in the contest. Lenker had five saves for Muhlenberg.

The Red Hawks will look to bounce back on Saturday, September 6 when it travels to Madison, NJ to face Drew University at 6:00 pm.
