Cortland, NY - Senior Chris McBride (Northport) converted a penalty kick early in the first half, and senior goalie Tim Beauvais (Hilton) made six saves, including two exceptional stops in the second half, as the Cortland men's soccer team defeated nationally 14th-ranked Montclair St., 1-0, Wednesday afternoon at Jets Field in non-conference action.
Â
McBride scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 10th minute, blasting a penalty kick into the upper right corner after a Montclair St. player was whistled for a handball in the box. The Red Hawks (3-1) generated their best scoring chance of the first half in the 33rd minute, but junior
Damian Bziukiewicz (East Rutherford, NJ, Becton Regional) hard shot just sailed over the crossbar.
Â
The Red Dragons (2-2) created the first quality scoring chance in the second half. Cortland junior Ole Toepfer (Haltern am See, Germany/Hiberniaschule Herne) directed a shot on goal from the left side in the 71st minute that Montclair St. sophomore goalie
Michael Gonzalez (Kenilworth, NJ, Union Catholic) denied with a diving save, one of his four stops in the game. The rebound came out to Red Dragon sophomore Daniel Tesoro (Sydney, Australia/Endeavour Sports), but his follow-up shot was blocked.
Â
Moments later, Beauvais recorded the first of his two dramatic saves. Montclair St. freshman
Kyle Goodwin (South Brunswick, NJ, South Brunswick) drove an 18-yard shot on goal from the left side that Beauvais stopped with a leaping save at the right post, sending the ball over the end line. Then, in the 75th minute, Red Hawk senior
Brian Cullen (Clementon, NJ, Highland Regional) sent a shot targeted for inside the right post only to have Beauvais make a diving stop.
Â
As Montclair St. continued to press, Cortland generated two great scoring chances on quick counters. In the 84th minute, sophomore Daniel Freind (Deer Park) directed an open header over the goal, and Gonzalez needed to make a save on Toepfer's header from the middle of the six-yard box in the 85th minute. The Red Hawks had one last chance to create the tying goal with seven seconds left, but a service into the box on a free kick was headed out of danger sealing the Cortland win.
The Red Hawks are back in action on Saturday, September 13 when it hosts Wheaton (IL) at MSU Soccer Park beginning at 7:00 pm. Montclair will be supporting The Cure Starts Now Foundation against pediatric cancer. All proceeds from the game will be donated to the organization.
