Montclair, NJ - Senior forward Noah Anthony (St. Charles, IL / St. Charles North) and junior midfielder Marshall Hollingsworth (Libertyville, IL / Libertyville) each scored in the second half as No. 20 Wheaton College (IL) took control over the final 45 minutes for a 5-3 victory over 14th-ranked Montclair State on Saturday evening.
The Thunder (5-2) won their third straight as they squandered an early three-goal lead with a smothering defensive effort in the second half.
Freshman forward
Kyle Goodwin (South Brunswick, NJ, South Brunswick) collected a pair of assists for Montclair State, which dropped its second straight contest as the Red Hawks (3-2) were outshot 10-1 in the second half after battling back from the three-goal deficit in the first period.
On a rainy evening at MSU Soccer Park, the only thing dropping faster from the sky than the rain seemed to be the number of soccer balls into the back of the net as the two teams, who allowed a combined nine goals thus far, saw six scored in the opening period.
The first three came from Wheaton which did all its damage in the first 11 minutes of the game. Adam Blackman (Urbana, IL / Urbana) made a cross from the right side to the left of the penalty area onto the foot of Jordan Golz (River Forest, IL /Oak Park-River Forest) who ripped a shot into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead at the six-minute mark. It took less than two minutes for the Thunder to add to the lead as Blackman set up Stephen Golz (River Forest, IL / Oak Park-River Forest), this one on a cross from the left side that wad headed int.
Stephen Golz stunned Montclair with his second of the game and fifth of the season at 10:06 for a 3-0 lead before Montclair began to chip away at the lead.
Sophomore
Mike Olla (Bloomfield, NJ, St. Benedict's Prep) got the Red Hawks on the board at 12:35 of the period scoring his second of the year. Goodwin drove a pass from 17 yards on the left side to Olla, who one-time a shot into the net making the score 3-1. Montclair State drew closer in the 33rd minute as Goodwin again had a hand in the score setting up
Ryan Morris (Freehold, NJ, Freehold Township) for the latter's first goal of 2014 as the lead was trimmed to 3-2.
With the momentum on its side, MSU drew even at 3-3 with 6:24 to play as
Lucas Terci (Union, NJ, Union) converted a penalty kick after a Montclair State player was fouled inside the penalty area.
The Thunder had an opportunity to regain the lead inside the last four minutes when Noah served a corner kick that was headed by Stephen Golz that looked as if it would find the back of the net, however
Maxx Wurzburger (Glen Rock, NJ, Glen Rock) headed the ball off the backline keeping the game tied at 3-3.
In the second half, Wheaton slowly took the momentum back in their possession with two quality chances before a miscue by Montclair allowed the Thunder to regain the lead for good. Anthony drove the ball in from the left side to the middle of box before being bumped off by a Red Hawks defender who then tried to drop the ball off to a teammate. But a miscommunication ocurred and the ball was left all alone for Anthony who alertly fired a shot into the net for a 4-3 advantage at 50:44.
The Thunder then clamped down on MSU allowing the Red Hawks just the one shot in the second half. Meanwhile Wheaton kept pressing and had several other chances that were stopped by MSU keeper
Michael Gonzalez (Kenilworth, NJ, Union Catholic) before Hollingsworth put the game away with his goal at 85:39.
Gonzalez finished with six saves for Montclair State with senior Matt Paprocki stopping three
