Hayley Merrill (West Windsor, NJ, West Windsor-Plainsboro South) posted 18 kills against SUNYIT while sophomore
Melissa Terpstra (Midland Park, NJ, Midland Park) added 13 against host Purchase College as Montclair State completed a perfect weekend at the Panther Invitational with a pair of victories on Sunday.
The Red Hawks extended their winning streak to five matches with a four-set win over SUNYIT before capping off the weekend with a 3-0 win against Purchase. At 9-2, Montclair State is off to its best start since the 1998 campaign when it won 12 of its first 13 matches.
Merrill led the MSU attack against SUNYIT as Montclair rebounded from a 27-25 loss in the first set taking the next three 25-16, 25-16, 25-18. Sophomore
Courtney Matlock (Jackson, NJ, Jackson Memorial) collected 10 kills while freshman
Madison Maute (Sparta, NJ, Sparta) added seven along with seven total blocks, including three solo.
Allyssa Angel (Flemington, NJ, Hunterdon Central) had four kills along with four digs. Senior setter
Angela Campo (Washington Township, NJ, Westwood) notched 35 assists along with eight digs while
Lily Scanzillo (Upper Saddle River, NJ, Northern Highlands) had a team-best 18 digs.
Samantha Szura (Hewitt, NJ, Ramapo) had 15 digs with
Jenifer Ramirez (Bogota, NJ, Bogota) getting nine digs.
Montclair rolled past the host Panthers 25-15, 25-14 and 25-9 behind Terpstra, who had two aces, three digs and two blocks in addition to her 13 kills. Senior
Erika Gerner (Sparta, NJ, Sparta) added seven kills, four aces and eight digs while
Rebecca Matasker (Washington Township, NJ, Westwood) chipped in with five kills and five digs.
Kimberly Matlock (Jackson, NJ, Jackson Memorial) served up six aces in addition to recording 10 assists while
Alyssa Plum (Williamstown, NJ, Williamstown) and Campo had 10 and eight assists, respectively. Scanzillo had seven digs.
Montclair State is back in action on Tuesday, September 16 when it opens New Jersey Athletic Conference play at six-time defending league champion Richard Stockton at 7:00 pm.
