Johnston Scores Lone Goal for Red Hawks; Butrico Two Defensive Saves

Albany, NY – Seven different players scored a goal, as fifth-ranked Middlebury snapped ninth-ranked Montclair State's five-game winning streak with a 9-1 victory over the Red Hawks at the University at Albany on Sunday.

Junior forward Maura Johnston (Montville, NJ, Montville) had a goal for the Red Hawks, who fell to 7-2 with the loss. Senior Joelle Butrico (South Plainfield, NJ, South Plainfield) had a pair of defensive saves.

The Panthers jumped on the board early with a pair of goals in the opening 2:22. Just 1:17 into the match, Shannon Hutteman scored following a penalty corner when Alyssa DiMaio inserted the ball to the stick of Anna Kenyon, who set it for Hutteman on the left side. A little more than a minute later, Catherine Fowler recorded her first goal of the game on a penalty stroke. In the ninth minute, Kenyon passed the ball across the top of the arc from left to right onto the stick of Lauren Berestecky, who put the Panthers up 3-0. Pam Schulman tapped in her own rebound at 20:56, giving Middlebury a four-goal advantage.

Trailing 4-0, Montclair State got on the board following three-consecutive penalty corners at 23:08 when Johnston, who also had a defensive save in the game, scored her sixth of the year via an assist from Gianna Moglino (Holmdel, NJ, Holmdel).

The score remained 4-1 in favor of Middlebury until the 33rd minute. Kenyon capped off the quintet of first-half goals for the Panthers with an unassisted tally at 32:57.

Following the halftime break, Annie Leonard and Bridget Instrum each recorded scores at 38:05 and 40:56, respectively, via assists from Fowler. At 46:09, Fowler completed her four-point performance with her second goal of the match on a low, hard shot from the right side.

Just over 10 minutes later, Hutteman completed the scoring with a goal on a penalty corner on assists from Lauren Schweppe and DiMaio.
