No. 7 FIeld Hockey Pulls Away From Rhodes in Second Half, 4-1

Johnston Two Goals, Myers Two Assists as MSU Snaps Skid

Montclair, NJ – Senior MAURA JOHNSTON scored twice with classmate CHARISSE MYERS picking up a pair of assists as No. 7 Montclair State pulled away in the second half for a 4-1 victory over Rhodes College at Sprague Field on Saturday evening.

KAITLYN STRUSS and ARIELLE GALGANO each had goal helping the Red Hawks (12-3) snap a two-game losing streak.

Christina DeFelice had a goal for Rhodes (9-5) which had a four-game winning streak halted with the loss.

It was the first meeting between the schools since the first round of the 2011 NCAA Division III Tournament also at Sprague Field. Montclair State won that contest 3-2 in overtime.

After a frenetic first-half pace, the two teams entered the second half knotted at 1-1. Struss gave MSU the lead at 26:34 on her team-leading 11th goal of the year with Myers picking up the assist. DeFelice tied the game a little over five minutes later smacking in a rebound on the left doorstep.

The second half proved to be a dominating one for the Red Hawks as they held the Lynx without a shot for the final 35 minutes. Montclair, which also took 15 penalty corners in the second half, scored three times in span of 4:45.

Six of those aforementioned 15 penalty corners came in a three-minute span with the Red Hawks finally capitalizing on the final one at the 51:31 mark. Johnston inserted the ball to Myers who then made a perfect give-and-go pass back with Johnston tucking the ball inside the left post for a 2-1 MSU advantage. Three minutes later Johnston added her second banging in a rebound in front on the left side for her sixth of the season and two-goal lead with 15:25 to play.

Galgano completed the run 1:41 later with her first of the season off a rebound.

Goalkeeper REBECCA BRATTOLE made that hold up as she stopped four shots in the first half. Rhodes keeper Laura Eckerkamp had 15 saves with Morgan Woodrow and Katie Johnson each recording a defensive save or the Lynx.

Montclair State outshot Rhodes 28-8.

Prior to the game, MSU honored its six senior members (pictured below in order) - Myers, Johnston, MEGHAN WEISS, DANICA WITTY, KELLY KRAMER and Brattole.

The Red Hawks play their final regular-season home game on Wednesday, October 21 hosting William Paterson University at 7:00 pm.
