No. 9 Men's Soccer Edges Ramapo, 2-1

Red Hawks Clinch NJAC Tournament First-Round Bye

Mahwah, NJ – Sophomore forward KYLE GOODWIN scored a pair of goals as No. 9 Montclair State edged Ramapo 2-1 in an NJAC matchup on Saturday afternoon.

Senior DAMIAN BZIUKIEWICZ had an assist as the Red Hawks won their third straight and earned a first-round bye for the NJAC Tournament which will begin on Saturday, October 31. MSU will be no worse than the No. 2 seed and could claim the league's regular-season title with a victory on Wednesday, October 28 against Rutgers-Newark.

Montclair is currently 7-1 with 21 points, two ahead of Stockton University which sits at 6-1-1 (19 points). Kean is third at 5-3 (15 points). MSU would earn the regular season crown for the second straight season with a victory or loss by Stockton to Ramapo on Wednesday.  Should the teams finished in a tie, the Red Hawks would hold the tiebreaker by virtue of its 3-1 win against the Ospreys on September 26.

Goodwin snapped a scoreless game in the 37th minute as he finished off a feed from Bziukiewicz for his seventh goal of the season. Montclair looked for more just over a minute later however Ramapo keeper Ryan Sprague stopped a shot by Bziukiewicz at 36:02.

Ramapo came within inches of tying the game in the 56th minute when Rob Shalikar put a header on frame that was knocked away at the goal line by an MSU defender. The Red Hawks countered with back-to-back chances in the 62nd and 65th minutes but Sprague stopped both keeping the contest a 1-0.

After another save by Sprague at 71:25, Montclair State would extend the lead to two goals as Goodwin netted his second of the game. The Roadrunners answered immediately scoring 34 seconds later with Ryan Campbell cutting the lead in half with his 11th of the year.

But that would be the last shot Montclair State yielded over the final 17:39 of the contest.

Sprague finished with nine saves for Ramapo while MIKE SAALFRANK stopped four for MSU.

Montclair outshot Ramapo 19-10 in the contest with the Roadrunners taking four of the six corner kicks in the match.
