Volleyball Drops Final Regular-Season Home Match to Mount St. Vincent

Red Hawks Take First Set, Lose Final Three

Montclair, NJ – Senior Ashleigh Scozzari recorded 28 kills and hit .462 as the College of Mount St. Vincent rebounded from a first-set loss for a 3-1 victory over Montclair State at the Panzer Athletic Center on Wednesday evening.

Maria Leineweber added 13 kills along with 15 digs as the Dolphins evened their record at 13-13 with a 23-25, 25-16, 25-17, 25-14 win over the Red Hawks in the first meeting between the schools since 2003.

Junior COURTNEY MATLOCK had eight kills for Montclair State, which won that initial contest by the same score 12 years ago at the FDU-Madison Tournament. MSU fell to 16-10 on the year with the loss.

Senior LILLIANA GONZALEZ had five kills with classmates COURTNEY LEPORE and NIKKI SENOPOULOS each adding three as MSU squandered a 17-7 lead but bounced back to grab a 1-0 lead in the match. CMSV tied the set at 18-18, four more ties were forged until the Red Hawks went back in front on a Dolphin attack error. Senopoulos followed with a kill for a 24-22 lead. A set error kept things going however Gonzalez got the final kill two-point win.

In the second set, Mount St. Vincent turned to Scozzari, who put down seven of her eight attempts while also registering three solo blocks as the Dolphins squared the match with the 25-16 win. CMSV then hit .438 in the third set to go in front. Scozzari had nine kills and added seven more in the fourth when the Dolphins used a 9-0 run to take control of the set and eventually the match.

Freshman NATALIA MAJKUT had six kills for MSU with Senopoulos, Gonzalez, LePore and MELISSA TERPSTRA each getting five. Senopoulos had five digs and two aces with KIMBERLY MATLOCK accumulating 30 assists along with 10 digs. Libero DANIELLE OLCESE led MSU with 17 digs.

Montclair State returns to action on Friday, October 30 as it travels to Rochester, NY to face Nazareth College in the first of four matches in the New York Regional Challenge.
