Johnston Scores Twice as Red Hawks Beat Ospreys

Galloway Township, NJ – Senior MAURA JOHNSTON scored a pair of goals as 10th-ranked Montclair State closed out its regular-season with a 5-2 win at Stockton University on Saturday afternoon.

ARIELLE GALGANO, KAILEY DALGAUER and AMBER HASLETT each scored a goal as the Red Hawks (15-4, 4-2 NJAC) bounced back from an early one-goal deficit for their second consecutive victory.

Montclair State held the Ospreys (3-14, 0-6 NJAC) to five shots in the game however it was Stockton scoring on its very first attempt as Laura Olbrich tapped in a rebound 32 seconds into the contest giving the hosts the 1-0 lead.

MSU tied the game less than eight minutes later as Johnston registered the first of her two goals. Off a penalty corner, Galgano found Johnston in a scrum in front of the goal with the latter banging in the loose ball for her seventh tally of the year and a 1-1 tie.

Montclair turned up the offensive pressure over the next five minute with four shots that were all turned away by Stockton keeper Emily Sorochynskyj.  Dalgauer gave the Red Hawks the lead at 13:38 tapping in a loose ball in front of the cage and Galgano made it a 3-1 contest at 21:48 on a writer shot from the top of the circle.

Haslett capped the first-half scoring for MSU with her sixth goal of the season with 8:31 left as Montclair State led 4-1. Stockton's Leah Davies snapped the run with her fourth goal of the year inside four minutes left as Montclair led 4-2 at the break.

Johnston would get the only score of the second half nearly six minutes in as her wrist shot trickled in for her second of the game and eighth of the season.

REBECCA BRATTOLE made two saves for the Red Hawks in the first 65 minutes and change, before KAITLIN MAGUIRE finished up with four-plus minutes of scoreless action.

Montclair State will next take the field on Wednesday, November 4 in the semifinals of the NJAC Tournament. The Red Hawks will be the No. 3 seed and will travel to second-seeded Rowan for a 7:00 pm matchup with the Profs. MSU fell to Rowan 5-3 in Glassboro on October 24.
