KAITLYN STRUSS and senior
CHARISSE MYERS combined for all the scoring as fifth-ranked Montclair State extended its winning streak to eight games with a 3-1 victory over Kean in New Jersey Athletic Conference action at Alumni Stadium on Tuesday.
Struss scored twice with Myers recoding a goal and assist as the Red Hawks improved to 11-1 overall while also capturing its second consecutive conference contest. MSU is now 2-0 in the NJAC.
Montclair State held off a furious Kean push in the first eight minutes of the contest blocking several shots. Despite being held with a shot for the first 15 minutes of the game the Red Hawks had a chance to take the lead. But Kean goalkeeper Katie DiCarlo stopped a penalty stroke against
MEGAN ROELOFFS as the game remained scoreless. MSU got two more cracks at the cage however DiCarlo came up with two saves. Montclair's
REBECCA BRATTOLE countered with three saves until the first goal was put on the board with 2:39 to go before halftime. Myers converted MSU's second stroke as the Red Hawks took the 1-0 lead into the break.
It took only six mintues for Montclair State to extend its lead in the second half as Struss, the NJAC Offensive Player of the Week, ripped a long shot through traffic that screened DiCarlo couldn't get to at 41:31. After a back-and-forth for the next 10 minutes, Kean's Marissa Robinson put a shot on goal that defender
CAMILLE MAIMONE knocked away at the line keeping the Red Hawks in front by two.
Kean woule break through with 5:48 to play as Marissa Robinson scored but the Red Hawks responsed immediately as Struss banged in a rebound off a Myers shot for her second of the game giving MSU the 3-1 lead with 3:38 left.
Brattole finished with six saves for Montclair, which was outshot in the game 13-9. Kean also held the edge in penalty corners, 6-4.
Montclair State returns to action on Friday, October 9 with a key NJAC matchup at Sprague Field against top-ranked and defending NCAA Division III champion The College of New Jersey. Game time for the NFCHA Top 5 battle is 7:00 pm.
