No. 13 Men's Lacrosse Tagged with First Loss as Ursinus Gets Past Red Hawks, 11-9

Mangan Scores Three; Raymond Goal, Three Assists for MSU

Collegeville, PA – The Montclair State men's lacrosse team, ranked No. 13 by the USILA, suffered its first loss of the season on Wednesday evening as the Red Hawks were clipped by Ursinus College, 11-9.

The Bears (4-0) recorded the first three goals of the game and then used a four-goal run in the third period to upend Montclair State. Mark Stratton, Steve Mussoline and Jake Weber each scored three times to help keep Ursinus unbeaten.

BRETT MANGAN had three goals and one assist while SHANE RAYMOND added four points on a goal and three assists for Montclair State (3-1), which had an 11-game regular-season unbeaten streak snapped with the loss. MSU's last defeat in the regular-season came on March 19, 2014 at home against Stevens.

Mussoline scored twice in the opening period staking the Bears to the 3-0 lead with 4:37 left in the period. ZACH SCHRECK got MSU on the board late in the period and Raymond's goal 37 seconds into the second made the score 3-2. The teams traded goals before Ursinus got scores from Jake Weber and Mike Neal, the latter a man-up tally for a 6-3 advantage with 4:14 to go before halftime. ALEX HAHN answered for MSU a minute later as the Red Hawks trailed by two at the break.

The Bears came out flying in the third quarter scoring 29 seconds in on a man-up goal by Stratton. That began a decisive four-goal run with Stratton adding one more before Jake Weber's power play goal gave the Bears a 10-4 lead with 2:59 remaining in the third.

Mangan's man-up score with 1:18 left stopped the run and goals by Hahn and CONNOR CUNNINGHAM to open the fourth pulled MSU within 10-7 with 13:26. Stratton countered for Ursinus with seven minutes to play restoring the lead to four. Mangan would score twice in the final three minutes however it would not be enough for the Red Hawks.

The Bears took advantage of its man-up opportunities in the game converting 4-of-6 chances. Montclair State was 3-of-6 with the extra man.

Schreck had a goal and two assists for MSU. Blaise Mantineo was dominant at the "X" winning 16-of-22 faceoffs in addition to recording three ground balls. LEN BELLEZZA had seven ground balls and forced four turnovers with KIEL DEITRICH collecting three ground balls. Goalkeeper LUCAS JONES stopped seven shots and had three ground balls.  

Montclair State is off until Wednesday, March 18 when it travels to Allentown, PA to face Muhlenberg College at 4:00 pm. The contest was to be the season opener for both teams back on February 18 however that was postponed due to cold and snow-covered field conditions.
