Port Charlotte, FL – Senior lefthander
JONATHAN TORREGROZA tossed his first career shutout, a seven-hitter as Montclair State picked up its first victory of the season with a 4-0 win over Muskingum University in the Snowbird Classic on Friday morning.
KEITH MURPHY had a pair of RBI as the Red Hawks (1-5) cracked the win column for the first time this season. MSU also avenged a 2-1 loss to the Muskies (3-5) on Sunday.
Torregroza (1-0) struck out six and walked in registering his fourth career complete game. Christian Hertrick took the loss for Muskingum allowing four runs and 13 hits in 5 2/3 innings.
The Red Hawks had a chance to break on top early loading the bases in the second with one out however a double play ended that threat. But Montclair would cash in on its opportunity in the fifth inning manufacturing a run with two outs.
CHRISTOPHER REYNOLDS singled and stole second. A walk and infield hit loaded the bases with Reynolds scampering home on a wild pitch for a 1-0 MSU advantage.
That lead would hold although Torregroza had to work out of a jam in the top of the sixth when the Muskies put runners at second and third with one out. The lefty got a much-needed infield pop and then fanned the next batter to end the inning.
Montclair widened its lead in the bottom of the inning scoring three times.
HECTOR GONZALEZ singled with two outs putting runners at first and second. Murphy followed with a double to left field scoring both runners making the score 3-0. An error on the next play allowed Murphy to score for a four-run MSU lead.
Torregroza retired the side in order in the seventh and allowed a pair of base runners in the eighth as he ended the latter threat with a comebacker to the mound. In the ninth, an error and one-out single put runners on first and second however Torregroza used the pitcher's best friend, the double play to end the game.
Murphy was one of five MSU players with multiple hits as Gonzalez, Reynolds,
PETER PENA and
SEAN THOMAS all had two hits to pace the 13-hit attack by the Red Hawks.
The Red Hawks are back in action on Saturday, March 14 with a pair of games. MSU will face Baldwin Wallace at 10:00 am looking to reverse a 9-8 loss to the Yellowjackets on Tuesday. Montclair will then take on North Park at 4:00 pm.
