Montclair, NJ – Senior attack
TIERNEY CONLON scored twice and assisted on seven other goals as Montclair State snapped a three-game losing streak with a 14-8 victory over FDU-Florham at Sprague Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Sophomores
FRANCESCA VERRONE and
AVIANA PARAGGIO registered four and three goals, respectively for the Red Hawks, who upped their record to 3-4 with their fifth consecutive victory against their in-state rival. MSU leads the all-time series 8-6.
Sophomore midfielder Brienna Reasoner (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) had three goals for the Devils, who had their two-game winning streak halted. FDU-Florham is now 4-3 on the season.
Montclair State jumped out to a 6-0 lead as Conlon set up Verrone and Paraggio in the first 10 minutes before scoring with 18:37 left for a three-goal lead. Paraggio netted her second a minute later and an un assisted marker from
VANESSA REY staked the Red Hawks to a 5-0 advantage.
KASEY MAGUIRE recorded the final goal with 14:20 to play before halftime.
FDU-Florham would get on the board as Reasoner scored with 12:26 to play however Montclair's
SERENA HITCHINS answered that with 9:34 remaining making the score 7-1. Courtney Rendinaro (Hillsborough, NJ / Hillsborough) scored just before halftime as Montclair State led by five at the break.
Joelle Manganella (Kenvil, NJ / Roxbury) and Rendinaro opened the second half with goals pulling the Devils within 7-4 however Verrone finished off a feed from Conlon with 15:17 to go restoring the lead to four goals.
The team would trade goals in the next minute as FDU drew closer at 9-6 when Manganella scored her second. Montclair State seemed to answer with a free-position goal moments later however that was waved off which nearly proved costly as Brianna Capobianco (Willston Park, NY / Kelleberg) and Reasoner scored 32 seconds apart getting the Devils within 9-8.
FDU would get possession back and was set up to tie the game on a free-position attempt but Manganella false started turning the ball over to the Red Hawks who took advantage of the miscue as Conlon fed
KARA CRAMPTON in front of the cage to a 10-8 lead with 6:50 left.
It would be the start of a five-goal, game-ending run by the Red Hawks, who got goals unassisted goals from Conlon, Verrone and
JENNA BUSSIERE over the next four minutes for a 13-8 lead with 2:51 left. Verrone capped off the scoring with her fourth with 47 ticks to play.
Conlon added five draws, seven ground balls and four caused turnovers for MSU while Bussiere and Maguire had four draws apiece. Goalkeeper
ALEXANDRA TEPPER finished with six saves along with a pair of caused turnovers and four ground balls.
Grace Warburton (Lake Hopactong, NJ / Jefferson) stopped six shots for the Devils, who got two goals and two assists from Rendinaro.
The Red Hawks are now off until Tuesday, March 31 when they travel to Farmingdale State for a 4:00 pm matchup with their former Skyline Conference foe. The Devils are home on Saturday, March 28 with a 1:00 pm contest with Kean University.
