No. 16 Cortland's Strong Second Quarter Proves Costly for No. 20 Men's Lacrosse, 17-11

Mangan Three Goals, Two Assists for Red Hawks

Cortland, NY – Mike Hart scored three goals, including the last in a seven-goal run by 20th-ranked Cortland in the second period as the 16th-ranked Red Dragons knocked off No. 20 Montclair State 17-11 on Saturday afternoon.

Billy Davis, James Stavrakis and Pat Baldwin each had two goals for Cortland, which evened its record at 4-4.

BRETT MANGAN collected three goals and two assists for Montclair State, which fell to 5-3. MICHAEL JEVIC added a hat trick for the Red Hawks.

ZACH SCHRECK and Mangan each scored in the first period as the teams were deadlocked at 2-2 after one quarter. Stavrakis put Cortland back in front 2:05 into the second but that was immediately answered 29 seconds later as Mangan set up ALEX HAHN for the third tie of the contest at 3-3.

From that point on the Red Dragons took control with the final seven goals of the period. Matt Savlov scored with 11:44 remaining to put Cortland back on top and Pat Baldwin scored seven seconds later off the faceoff before Zach Hopps goal made it 6-3 with 10:50 to go. Devin Phelps tallied a manup and Savlov's second goal extended the lead to 8-3 before Davis and Hart scored late giving Cortland a 10-3 lead at the break.

Jevic ended the run on goal with 11:20 remaining in the third and Schreck's second got MSU within 11-5 however Baldwin and Austin Hope answered those as the Cortland lead moved to 13-5.  Mangan scored twice in the fourth quarter and goals by CONNOR CUNNINGHAM and RYAN TOTIN pulled MSU to 16-10 but T.J. deLyra answered with 2:53 left for Cortland.

LUCAS JONES had seven saves for the Red Hawks while Mangan, Totin and LEN BELLEZZA each forced a pair of turnovers.

Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, April 1 as it begins Skyline Conference play. The six-time defending league champion Red Hawks faceoff against Stockton University in Galloway Township at 7:00 pm.
