ZACH SCHRECK scored five times as 14th-ranked Montclair State tallied nine of the 10 goals in the second half pulling away for a 12-3 over Vassar College on Wednesday evening.
ALEX HAHN tallied three goals for the Red Hawks, who improved to 3-0 on the season. The game was played at Marist College's Tenney Stadium after snow forced the venue changed. Tonight's contest was also delayed nearly two hours after MSU ran into travel problems on the NY State Thruway.
Following the lengthy delay to start the contest, it then took a while for either team to get on the board although the Red Hawks controlled much of the offensive action in the opening period. Despite getting a majority of the shots it wasn't until the final minutes when MSU was able to break through. Schreck scored on an unassisted marker with 2:06 left in the period and added another with 38 seconds remaining as he finished off a feed from Hahn for a 2-0 lead at the end of the first.
Vassar would open the second with a goal however Schreck scored again off another assist by Hahn giving Montclair State a 3-2 lead at the break.
The second half would be all Montclair State. Schreck recorded his fourth 1:07 into the period and Hahn followed a minute later for a 5-2 advantage. The Brewers countered with a goal however
BRETT MANGAN scored with 2:41 to play and then set up a goal by
CONNOR CUNNINGHAM with 1:26 left helping MSU to a 7-3 lead after three periods.
Montclair would dominate in the final quarter scoring five times on 11 shots. Schreck's fifth with 12:07 to go was followed up with two by Hahn 48 seconds apart extending the Montclair lead to 10-3 with 11 minutes left.
MICHAEL SCHRECK scored with just under six minutes remaining before
MICHAEL JEVIC closed out the scoring with 19 seconds to play.
Mangan finished with four assists and four ground balls while freshman
DAVE DROZJOCK went 3-of-6 on faceoffs with a pair of ground balls.
MICHAEL SCHRECK and
ROBERT SNOW also had four ground balls apiece with
ZACH SCHRECK forcing a pair of turnovers and registering two ground balls. Lucase jones stopped seven shots for MSU.
Montclair State is off until Wednesday, March 11 when it travels to Collegeville, PA for a 7:00 pm match up with Ursinus College.
