Baseball Clipped by Muskingum in Season Opener at Snowbird Classic, 2-1

Reynolds, Murphy Each With Two Hits for Red Hawks

Port Charlotte, FL – Senior lefty JONATHAN TORREGROZA and freshman righthander CHUCK LAPORTA combined on a solid pitching effort however Muskingum University got a better performance from their hurlers as the Muskies edged the Red Hawks 2-1 in the Snowbird Classic on Sunday afternoon.

KEITH MURPHY and CHRISTOPHER REYNOLDS each had two hits for MSU (0-1) which outhit Muskingum 8-6 in the contest but came up a run short.

Torregroza, who took the loss (0-1) went 6 2/3 innings allowing five hits and one earned run, striking out four and walking one. LaPorta, making his collegiate debut, walked two and gave up a hit in the final 1 2/3 innings. Kyle Schmitgen got the win for Muskingum in relief as he pitched three scoreless innings to close out the game.

Muskingum jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Leitenberger led off with a bunt single and went to second on a throwing error. He would get to third on a ground out and scored as Brett Robberts singled through the right side for the game's first run.

The Red Hawks answered in the top of the fourth as Reynolds singled with one out and went to second on wild pitch. A single by PHILIP SCOTT put runners at the corners before PETER PENA lofted a sacrifice fly to right scoring Reynolds and tying the game at 1-1.

Muskingum took the lead in the bottom of the seventh taking advantage of a Montclair State error. Austin DeVore singled with two outs and stole seconds. Chris Leitenberger then bounced a ball to short that was misplayed allowing DeVore to score with what turned out to be the game-deciding run.

Montclair State returns to action on Monday, March 9 as it faces Heidelberg University at 9:30 am.
