Kubicka Collects 800th Win as Softball Sweeps Past Centenary College in Home Opener

Powers Goes 6-for-7, Picks Up Pitching Victory

Montclair, NJ – Junior BROOKE POWERS pitched a complete-game in the opener and also helped out at the plate going 6-for-7 with a pair of RBI as Montclair State swept past Centenary College in its home opener at the MSU Softball Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Head coach Anita Kubicka picked up her 800th career win as the Red Hawks (5-7) took the first contest 6-3 before finishing off the sweep in the nightcap with a 7-1 victory behind the complete-game performance of righthander REBECCA COLEMAN.

In the first contest, Montclair grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Powers helped her own cause with an RBI single scoring LAUREN GUILLEN. Centenar came back with two runs in the second to take the lead but Montclair recaptured the advantage with two runs in the bottom of the third. MELISSA RUSTEMEYER tied the game with a single back through the middle with SOPHIA IVEZAJ doing the same three batters later for a 3-2 lead.

After Centenary tied the game in the top the fifth, Montclair went back in front in the bottom of the inning as pinch-runner JEANINE KARNILA scored on an error. The Red Hawks tacked on two runs in the bottom of the sixth for insurance. Guillen smacked an opposite-field homer over the left-center fence with TINA CIACCIARELLI bringing home the final run on an RBI single.

Powers would allow a hit in the seventh before recording the final out for the win and the milestone victory for Kubicka, who became the sixth coach in NCAA Division III history to win 800 games. Now in her 25th season at MSU, the 2015 NFCA Hall of Fame inductee, has compiled a record of 801-284-2.

Powers (3-5) allowed seven hits, struck out three and did not walk anyone in the win. Ciacciarelli went 3-for-3 at the plate while Guillen, Powers and Rustemeyer each had two hits for MSU, which recorded 12 in the game.

Coleman tossed a five-hitter working her way around four walks to register her first career-complete game. She allowed a run in the second inning at Katie Lauria stroked a one-out single through the right side with the bases loaded.  But Coleman would limit the damage to just a run getting a force out a home on a comebacker and ground out to second as MSU trailed 1-0.

The Red Hawks got the run back in the third on a single by MELANY ZELLER and sent 10 batters to the plate in the fourth scoring four times to build a 5-1 lead. Guillen delivered the big blow with a bases-clearing triple and later scored the fourth run on a wild pitch. BRIANNA DAVIDSON and Powers each drove in a run in the fifth for the final margin.

Ivezaj, Guillen and Powers (4-for-4) had multiple-hit games for MSU, which had 14 in the second game.

Montclair State returns to action on Thursday with a doubleheader at College of Staten Island beginning at 3:00 pm.
