Women's Lacrosse Wins Fifth Straight as MSU Gets Past Rowan, 14-13

Bussiere, Verrone Combine for Seven Goals

Montclair, NJ – Senior midfielder JENNA BUSSIERE scored four times and collected two assists with sophomore FRANCESCA VERRONE adding three goals as Montclair State knocked off Rowan University 14-13 at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.

Senior TIERNEY CONLON added two goals and two assists as the Red Hawks (7-4, 3-0 NJAC) extended their winning streak to five games. Montclair also defeated Rowan for just the fourth time in 24 all-time meetings.

Avianna Paraggio and Bussiere scored 29 seconds apart in the first 3:38 of the game giving MSU a 2-0 lead however that was matched by goals from Rachel Emerson and Becca Wood that tied the game at 2-2 with 23 minutes to play.

Bussiere then began a key four-goal by the Montclair giving the Red Hawks a 6-2 advantage. Bussiere began the run with Conlon scoring then assisting on the next two goals before an unassisted marker by KASEY MAGUIRE made the score 6-2 with 17:27 go.  Wood ended the spurt but goals by SERENA HITCHINS and Alex DiPiero pushed the lead back to 8-3. Rowan's Jamie Blondina closed the gap with the last three goals of the half as the Red Hawks led 8-6 at the break.

MSU would get the first two goals of the half for a 10-6 lead before consecutive scores by Wood and a goal by Vicky Sucharski brought Rowan within a goal with 18:55 to play. Bussiere answered with a goal 49 seconds later and Conlon scored a minute after that before Bussiere's fourth with 14:55 remaining put the Red Hawks up 13-9.

Rowan cut the deficit to 13-11 with 5:22 to play on a Blondina goal however Bussiere found Verrone in front of the net for a huge goal with 3:09 left as the lead was 14-11.  Blondina found the back of the net 21 seconds later for a 14-12 advantage.

Montclair then got a huge win on the ensuing draw with NICOLE FRANCIS picking up the ball allowing MSU to run off precious time left in the contest. The Red Hawks would turn the ball over with 98 seconds left however Francis came up big again with a caused turnover that was scooped up by Maguire. MEREDITH KING would also come up with the last of her three caused turnovers for MSU in the final minute.

Goalkeepers ALEXANDRA TEPPER and REBECCA MYERS made three and six saves respectively for MSU. Bussiere had five draws and four ground balls with Conlon posting five draws along with three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.  

The Red Hawks return to action on Tuesday, April 14 hosting Ramapo College in another NJAC matchup at 7:00 pm.
