Baseball Downs New Jersey City 10-3 to Complete Home-and-Home Sweep

Macchia Gets Win, Long, Scott Two RBI Each as MSU Wins 2nd Straight

Montclair, NJ – Sophomore outfielders PHILIP SCOTT and MATT LONG each drove in a pair of runs to back the solid 7 1/3 innings by junior lefthander MICHAEL MACCHIA as Montclair State pulled away from New Jersey City, 10-3 in NJAC action at Yogi Berra Stadium on Friday.

Sophomore catcher RICH BURNER went 4-for-5 with an RBI as the Red Hawks (12-14, 6-6 NJAC) completed a home-and-home sweep against the Gothic Knights as it followed up Thursday's 14-5 win at the Thomas M. Gerrity Complex.

Zach Buchholz (Colonia, NJ / John F. Kennedy) drove in a pair of runs for NJCU, which dropped to 11-15 overall, 3-9 in the NJAC.

For the second straight day, MSU grabbed a lead in the first inning. Corey Cordasco led off the bottom of the first with a hustle double to right-centerfield and went to third on a balk before scampering home as Delio Coutihno (Colonia, NJ / Colonia) uncorked a wild pitch. The Red Hawks extended the lead to 2-0 in the second as Scott drilled a triple up the gap in right center.

From that point on Macchia and Coutihno traded goose eggs on the scoreboard until the fifth inning when the Gothic Knights took the lead. Eric Giordano (Metuchen, NJ / JFK-Islein) led off with single and moved around to third on a passed ball and wild pitch. Nick Ruscingno (Teaneck, NJ / Teaneck) walked and stole second with one out. Macchia got the second out however Buchholz lined a double down the right field line scoring both runners tying the game. Two batters later, Andrew Niech (Avenel, NJ / Colonia) singled through the right side giving NJCU a 3-2 advantage.

Montclair State would get the lead back in the sixth with four runs. Long opened the inning with a single and CHRISTOPHER REYNOLDS followed with a triple to knot the contest at 3-3. Burner followed with an RBI single for the go-ahead score and the Red Hawks added another as Scott pulled off a successful squeeze play with Burner crossing the plate. Cordasco added the final run on a fielder's choice as MSU led 6-3.

The Red Hawks tacked on four runs in the eighth for the final margin. Long singled with the bases loaded bringing home two runs with a third coming around on an error. He would then come home on an error making the score 10-3.

Macchia allowed six hits and three runs with seven strikeouts and a walk as she improved to 3-0. ANTHONY ALTIERI recorded two outs to close out the eighth before freshman AUSTIN MINTON fashioned a scoreless ninth inning. Coutinho (0-4) allowed six runs and nine hits with eight strikeouts and three walks.
