York, PA – Sophomore second baseman
MATT LONG went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs as Montclair State moved past the .500 mark for the first time this season with a 12-5 victory over York College (PA) on Tuesday afternoon.
RICH BURNER had three hits and two RBI while
IVAN OLIVERA drove in a pair of runs as the Red Hawks (15-14) pounded out 18 hits in capturing its fifth straight victory. Long, Burner,
KEVIN ALONSO and
HECTOR GONZALEZ all had three hits piece for the Red Hawks.
Burner stroked an RBI single in the top of the first to give MSU a 1-0 lead however the Spartans (12-16) answered with a run in the bottom of the inning to tie the contest. Montclair went back in front in the third as Long and Burner each drove in run with a base hit and
CHRISTOPHER REYNOLDS scored on an error. Long's third RBI in the fourth gave Montclair State a 5-1 advantage.
York battled back scoring four times in the fourth inning to tie the game at 5-5.
The Red Hawks took the lead for good in the fifth with four runs. Burner scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch and Olivera smacked a two-run double making the score 8-5.
KEITH MURPHY added the final run with a double down the right field line scoring Olivera.
Gonzalez singled in a run in the sixth to push the lead to 10-5 with the Red Hawks closing out the scoring in the seventh. Long drew a walk with the bases loaded and twin brother
RYAN LONG crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
Righthander
MICHAEL MATARAZZO picked up the victory in relief for his first win of the season (1-0). Matarazzo struck out four and gave up four hits and four runs in four innings.
TAYLOR PARSONS closed out the game with two scoreless innings.
MICHAEL MANFRA went the first three innings allowing a run and four hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
RYAN LONG finished 2-for-5 with three runs scored.
The Red Hawks return to action on Thursday, April 23 hosting Rutgers-Camden at Yogi Berra Stadium in an NJAC contest beginning at 3:30pm.
