Montclair, NJ – Senior attack
TIERNEY CONLON scored once and assisted on five goals breaking the MSU career record in that category as the Red Hawks built a seven-goal halftime lead en route to an 18-7 victory over Elmira College at Sprague Field on Tuesday evening.
Senior midfielder
JENNA BUSSIERE scored six goals with
KASEY MAGUIRE tallying three along with three assists as the Red Hawks (9-5) won for the seventh time in its last eight games. Ashton Hogan had three goals and three assists for Elmira (2-13), which dropped its fourth straight contest.
Goalkeeper
ALEXANDRA TEPPER made four saves early to keep the game scoreless before MSU broke through with 24:34 left in the first half as Maguire fed
FRANCESCA VERRONE for the game's first score. Bussiere added a goal two minutes later however Hogan answered 17 seconds later for a 2-1 MSU lead with 21:48 left.
Montclair State reeled off five goals over six-minute span to build a 7-1 advantage. Paraggio opened the scoring with 21 minutes to play with Bussiere adding her second before
KARA CRAMPTON's goal with 17:07 left pushed the lead to 5-1.
SERENA HITCHINS fed
AMANDA BEAL for a goal before Bussiere notched her third with 14:57 remaining.
Moorea Spoljaric scored twice and Hogan once as the Soaring Eagles cut the lead to 8-4 but MSU closed out the half with three goals in the final 3:18 of the period. Conlon assisted on all three scores, including a goal by Hitching with 1:30 to play. It was the 235
th career assist for Conlon, who surpassed Cathy Homiek (2001-04) for the MSU all-time lead.
The Red Hawks, who led 11-4 at the break, opened the scoring in the second on goals by Bussiere and Beal but Elmira hung around with three consecutive goals to make the score 13-7 with 19:02 left but again MSU pulled away with the final five goals.
Conlon had a hand in the first three, assisting on the first, scoring the second and getting the helper on the third with 12:57 left. Conlon upper her career assist total to 238 which is two shy of the NCAA Division III record held by Buffalo State's Kendyl Clarkson (2008-12).
Tepper finished with eight saves for Montclair State which got five draws and three ground balls from Verrons. Beal had three draws and four ground balls while
MEREDITH KING forced four turnovers and recorded a pair of ground balls. Crampton led MSU with five ground balls.
Montclair State closes out its regular season on Saturday, April 25 at home against Rutgers-Camden. Game is 1:00 pm and it will be Senior Day at Sprague Field as the Red Hawks will honor their four seniors – Conlon, Bussiere,
BRITTANY DILGER and
VANESSA REY.
