Men's Lacrosse Pushes Past Kean to Capture Skyline Conference Regular-Season Title, 15-7

Mangan Four Goals as MSU Claims Top Seed in Conference Tournament

Montclair, NJ – Junior attack BRETT MANGAN scored four goals and added two assists as Montclair State used a nine-goal run bridging the second and third period in a 15-7 victory over Kean University on Wednesday at Sprague Field.

Juniors CONNOR CUNNINGHAM and ZACH SCHRECK each collected a hat trick as the Red Hawks (10-5), winners of four straight, captured the Skyline Conference regular-season title for the seventh time in eight years. Montclair, now 5-0 in conference play will be the No. 1 seed in the Skyline Tournament which begins on Wednesday, April 29 with semifinal action.

Junior attack Anthony Perrotta had two goals and two assists for Kean, which fell to 8-7 on the season, 3-2 in the Skyline with the loss.

Kean struck first as Perrotta scored with 11:33 to go however Schreck answered 65 seconds later with Cunningham putting MSU in front 2-1 on an unassisted tally with 6:16 to play. Matt Speciale knotted the game with under three minutes remaining but MICHAEL SCHRECK scored for a 3-2 lead with 42 seconds on the clock. Anthony Carpenter would square the game at 3-3 beating the first-quarter horn on a whistling shot from the left side.

The second quarter belonged to the Red Hawks as they scored eight times. Cunningham got the ball rolling 70 seconds into the period and Mangan connected off a feed from Schreck with 12:58 to play for a 5-3 lead. Cunningham connected again with MICHAEL JEVIC scoring with 6:26 to go as the lead went to four goals. ZACH SCHRECK got the next two and Mangan added his second for a 10-3 lead before SHANE RAYMOND closed out the half with his 12 of the season with nine ticks remaining.

Mangan's goal with 11:24 capped the Red Hawks run which grew to 12-3. Kean would take control the rest of the way with several long possessions as it outshot Montclair 19-5. Despite the advantage in shots and possession, the Cougars were only able to take two goals off the lead. Speciale scored on a man up with Perrotta and Carpenter each getting one bringing Kean within 12-6 at the end of three.

But the Red Hawks dashed away any further comeback with three goals in the first four minutes of the fourth. Jevic scored a power-play goal 40 seconds in and Mangan's fourth with 12:38 extended the lead to 14-6 before MICHAEL SCHRECK fed Raymond for the final MSU goal with just over 10 minutes left.

Jevic and Raymond each had two goals for the Red Hawks while MICHAEL SCHRECK finished with a goal and two assists. LUCAS JONES stopped six saves for Montclair State which got nine ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers from RYAN TOTIN. Mangan also had six ground balls.

Maxwell Fields had 12 saves for the Cougars, who got a solid effort from faceoff specialist Edward Adams, who was 10-of-17 with five ground balls. Fields led Kean with seven ground balls.

Montclair State closes out its regular season schedule on Saturday, April 25 as it hosts College of Mount St. Vincent at Sprague Field beginning at 3:00 pm.
