Montclair, NJ – Sophomore forward
KYLE GOODWIN (South Brunswick, NJ / South Brunswick) scored off a free kick with one second remaining lifting No. 24 Montclair State past Manhattanville College 1-0 in the season opener at MSU Soccer Park on Tuesday afternoon.
Goodwin's tally gave the Red Hawks (1-0) their fifth consecutive opening day win and extended MSU's season-opening unbeaten streak to 20 games. The last time Montclair fell in an opening game was 1995, a 2-0 loss to Elmira College.
Senior goalkeeper Willie Silber (Holbrook, NY / Sachem East) made seven saves for the Valiants, who matched Montclair State step for step before a foul and bit of misfortune handed them a loss in the season opener for the second time in three seasons.
Montclair improved to 4-0-2 against Manhattanville.
The Red Hawks outshot the Valiants 20-4 in the contest including 13 of the 15 taken in the second half however it would be the last one that provided the difference. With the clock ticking inside 30 seconds, Manhattanville was whistled for a foul just outside the top of the box on the right side.
The clock continued to run with both teams scrambling to setup their positions. Goodwin, the 2014 NJAC Rookie of the Year, blasted a ball that went through the defender wall. The shot headed toward the middle portion of the goal however it glanced off a defender sending to the lower left side of the net for the game winner.
Despite being outshot in the decisive margin, the Valiants actually got the first solid chance of the game as Robin Schaufele (Kalix, Swededn / Kungsfaegin) headed a ball in front that MSU goalkeeper
MIKE SAALFRANK (Ramsey, NJ / Ramsey) scooped up in the seventh minute.
Silber came up with two big saves a little over eight minutes later and then denied
MIKE OLLA with a diving stop in the 21
st minute as the game went scoreless into halftime.
In the second half, Montclair would get several quality chances however it was unable to breakthrough. Silber made a sliding punch away on a shot by
DAMIAN BZIUKIEWICZ with 30 minutes remaining. Bziukiewicz, Goodwin, Olla and
MIKE TARANTO each had shots go just wide and Silber added his final save with 56 seconds left, denying Goodwin.
Saalfrank, making his collegiate debut, made two saves for his first career shutout.
Both teams are back in action on the weekend. Montclair State makes a trip to Tennessee for a pair of matches starting Friday, September 4 against Covenant College (GA) at Maryville College. The Red Hawks face Maryville on Sunday, September 6. Manhattanville is on the road for its next contest on Saturday, September 5 at New York University.
