Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State volleyball team split their two matches in the North Jersey Challenge at the Panzer Athletic Center on Friday evening. The Red Hawks (4-2) defeated Baruch College in four sets before falling to Gordon College in a grueling five-set contest.
Junior
COURTNEY MATLOCK posted 31 kills and 25 digs for Montclair, which sits at 4-2 overall following the split. The Red Hawks defeated Baruch (2-5) by scores of 25-17, 29-31, 21-25 and 25-11 in the first match on the evening. Gordon (4-4) walked away with the five set win posting a 27-25, 28-30, 25-18, 20-25, 15-10 triumph in a match that last over two hours.
Matlock had 14 kills and 16 digs along with six aces in the victory against Baruch. She had four in the first set and added five more in the second as Montclair built its two-set lead. She had three in the fourth along with four aces and five digs as the Red Hawks closed out the match in the fourth.
Freshman
NATALIA MAJKUT added 10 kills and three blocks while
NIKKI SENOPOULOS had nine kills and 12 digs. Libero
DANIELLE OLCESE tied Matlock for team honors with 16 digs while Senopoulos recorded 12. Setter
KIMBERLY MATLOCK had 37 assists with freshman
ASHLEY GRIFFITH getting 10 digs.
Matlock continued her strong play in the loss to Gordon with 17 kills along with three aces and nine digs in addition to a pair of blocks. Senior
COURTNEY LEPORE had 12 kills while
MADISON MAUTE chipped in with six kills and three blocks. April D'Angelo had five kills off the bench.
KIMBERLY MATLOCK recorded a season-best 53 assists and also had 10 digs. Olcese led the Red Hawks with 15 digs while
LILY SCANZILLO added 13 and Senopoulos 12.
The Red Hawks continue action in the North Jersey Challenge on Saturday, September 12 hosting another tri-match. MSU faces Gettysburg in the first match at 11:00 am and close out the day taking on St. Joseph's (LI) at 3:00 pm.
