Montclair, NJ – Sophomore midfielder
MIKE TARANTO scored from 25 yards out with 19:52 remaining as ninth-ranked Montclair State slipped past Haverford College, 3-2 at MSU Soccer Park on Wednesday evening.
Senior's
DAMIAN BZIUKIEWICZ and
LUCAS TERCI each scored a goal as the Red Hawks squandered a two-goal first half lead but bounced back to remain perfect on the season at 6-0.
Ryan Hill (Mercer Island, WA/ Mercer Island) and Tejan Walcott (Cambria Heights, NY / The Lawrenceville School) recorded goals for the Fords (2-3), who suffered their second straight one-goal loss. All three of Haverford's losses this season are by a goal.
MSU grabbed a 1-0 lead 6:14 into the contest as Terci setup Bziukiewicz' third goal of the season. Making a run down the right side, Terci flipped the ball down inside the six where Bziukiewicz was able to finish. The assist was the 36
th career helper for Terci, who moved within one of tying John Rubinetti (1988-91) for the Montclair State all-time record.
Terci then made it a two-goal advantage at 18:03 on a penalty kick, is third of the year and the 106
th point for the All-American, who is fifth all-time with 106 career points.
The Fords would get one back with 3:33 left in the first half. A miscommunication between defenders deep in MSU territory left a free ball at the top of the box for Hill, who took full advantage of the miscue with a shot inside the left post as Haverford trimmed the lead to 2-1.
Haverford wasted little time knotting the contest in the second half as Walcott netted his second goal of the season. A cross from the left side of the box ricocheted off an MSU defender on to foot of Walcott, who beat Red Hawk keeper
MIKE SAALFRANK to the right post for the equalizer at 50:32 mark.
Saalfrank came up save a few minutes later and Montclair would take the lead in the 71
st minute.
MATT HENDRICKSON got a ball inside the penalty area and fired a shot that was blocked. The ball bounced back out to Taranto who dribbled two steps before unleashing a blast inside the left post for the go-ahead goal.
Montclair looked to add more however Sam Miller (Mercer Island, WA / Mercer Island) stopped
RAFAEL TERCI with 11:46 remaining. Saalfrank would come up big in the final six minutes denying Walcott with 5:25 to go and again with 30 seconds remaining to preserve the win.
Saalfrank finished with seven saves while Miller posted three. Montclair State outshot Haverford 13-10 in the match with the Fords gaining the edge in corner kicks, 2-1.
