Montclair, NJ – Anthony Passiatore fired in a shot from the top right corner of the penalty area with 73 seconds remaining as Oneonta handed No. 9 Montclair State its first loss of the season with a 2-1 victory at MSU Soccer Park on Saturday evening.
Jake Sutherland had a goal and assist for the Red Dragons (4-2-1), who posted the first victory in the short series between the teams. MSU and Oneonta met twice before with both contests decided by penalty kicks in 2010 and 2012.
Freshman
MATT HENDRICKSON had the lone goal for Montclair State, which fell to 6-1 on the season.
Two early first-half goals forged the 1-1 and it appeared as though more than 90 minutes would be needed to decide the contest again. Inside the final two minutes, the Red Dragons were able to keep the ball and the possession in the attack end moving down toward the lower right side of the penalty area. Brandon Arrango the flicked the ball back up to the corner where Passaiatore drilled a shot that went off the hands of MSU keeper
MIKE SAALFRANK and into the left side for what turned out to be the game-winner.
The Red Hawks grabbed the lead in the 12
th minute as Hendrickson collected his second goal of the season.
RAFAEL TERCI moved drove along the right side before flipping a pass back into the middle where Hendrickson was able to slide it under the on-charging keeper Vincent Pellegrino for the 1-0 Montclair State lead.
Oneonta would answer seven minutes later on Sutherland's third tally of the year, which came after two saves by Pellegrino. Hans Purtell got the ball on top left side of the box and pushed a pass through on the right side to Sutherland who went 1-on-1 with Saalfrank. Sutherland rolled the shot just ahead of the sliding Saalfrank knotting the contest at a goal apiece.
After the goals were scored, it became a game of chances and great plays that kept the game tied until almost the final minute. Saalfrank made a save against Passiatore in the 26
th minute and added two more early in the second half. Pellegrino then made a spectacular diving save to his left on a header by
JOHN STARNER in the 55
th minute.
Corey Santangelo nearly gave Oneonta the lead in the 68
th minute however his free kick clanged off the crossbar.
Pellegrino and Saalfrank each finished with five saves. The Red Dragons held the 15-11 edge in shots while MSU took all eight corner kicks in the contest.
Montclair State goes right back to work on Monday, September 21 when it hosts City College of New York at 8:00 pm.
