SOPHIE CALVERLEY scored a pair of goals as No. 24 Montclair State posted its fifth straight win, blanking FDU-Florham, 5-0 on Wednesday evening.
Senior
STEFANIE GOMES had a goal and assist for the Red Hawks, who improved to 5-1 while recording its second shutout of the season.
TYLER MADISON and
JENNIE HORNSTRA also scored for Montclair.
The Red Hawks scored three times in the first half on six shots as it outshot the host Devils, 6-1. Madison provided the first goal with a 20-yard shot from the right side over the keeper's head for a 1-0 MSU advantage at the 8:38 mark.
MSU added two goals 2:04 apart in the latter portion of the half. Calverley got the first one knocking in a cross from the right side by
JANAE GEONNETTI. Gomes would get the next goal banging in a loose ball in the box as MSU led by three at halftime.
Hornstra, who had the game-winner in MSU's win over Rochester on Sunday, recorded her second goal in as many games as she booted a shot off a rebound at 59:12. Gomes set up the final goal with 15:39 remaining sending a cross from the left side in the box where Calverley completed the play for her second of the contest.
ERINNE FINLAYSON stopped four shots for her second shutout in as many appearances.
Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, September 19 when it hosts New Jersey City University in its conference opener. Kickoff is set for 2:00 pm at MSU Soccer Park.
