Montclair, NJ – Freshman
KAILEY DALGAUER scored twice while classmate
AMBER HASLETT added a goal and assist as No. 8 Montclair State scored three times in the first half en route to a 3-0 victory over Vassar College at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.
KELLY KRAMER collected an assist helping the Red Hawks to their fourth straight victory as Montclair upped its record to 7-1 overall. Freshman goalkeeper Paige Amico stopped eight shots for Vassar (6-2) as the Brewers' three-game winning streak came to a halt.
The contest was the first between the two teams in 17 years as Montclair evened the all-time record at 3-3. MSU and Vassar last met in the Betty Richey Tournament on September 12, 1998 – a 2-1 Red Hawk victory.
Montclair State wasted very little time getting on the board as Dalgauer scored 2:14 into the contest. Off a penalty corner, the ball got down low on the right side. Haslett put forth a shot on goal that was tipped in by Dalgauer on the doorstep giving the Red Hawks the 1-0 lead.
Red Hawk keeper
REBECCA BRATTOLE made back-to-back saves in the 10
th minute to keep MSU in front before the lead increased by a goal to 2-0 at 11:19 when Haslett, the NJAC Rookie of the Week, flipped a shot that went off the right post. The freshman quickly gathered the carom and deposited the rebound back in to the cage for her third goal in as many games.
Brattole again came up with a save in the 23
rd minute and Amico stopped four rapid-fire shots with seven minutes remaining keeping the game at two goals.
Montclair tacked on its final goal of the half with 15 seconds to go before halftime. Kramer moved in along the right side before flipping a shot toward the cage that was redirected by Dalguer.
The rest was left up to the MSU defense which made all six Vassar shots over the final 35 minutes go for naught.
KAITLIN MAGUIRE made three saves in the final 16 minutes to complete Montclair State's third shutout of the year. Brattole totaled four in her near 54 minutes of work.
The Red Hawks are back in action on Saturday, September 26 when they host Gwynedd Mercy University at Sprague Field beginning at 1:00 pm. MSU will honor its 1990 ECAC Mid-Atlantic Championship team and its 2005 NCAA Division III Tournament squad.
