Jersey City, NJ - The Montclair State men's soccer team, ranked No. 12/13 by the NSCAA and D3Soccer.com, respectively scored four times in the second half as the Red Hawks opened defense of their New Jersey Athletic Conference title with a 4-0 win over New Jersey City at the Thomas M. Gerrity Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
Freshman
MATT HENDRICKSON scored twice while
RAFAEL TERCI added a goal and assist as the Red Hawks (8-1, 1-0 NJAC) registered their second consecutive shutout.
AARON ROSE had goal with
DAMIAN BZIUKIEWICZ registering an assist.
MSU outshot the Gothic Knights 8-3 in the first half yet found themselves in a scoreless draw until early in the second half when Hendrickson tallied the first of his two goals 2:21 into the period. Bziukiewicz played Hendrickson onto the right wing where he unloaded on a shot that beat keeper Anthony Moyano to the near post giving the Red Hawks a 1-0 lead.
The Red Hawks held that advantage until the 65
th minute when it scored twice in a 58-second span. Hendrickson added his second goal taking a pass from Terci at the top of the 18 and sliding a shot underneath a diving Moyano making it 2-0. Terci then took a failed clear out of the defensive end and found the back of the net as MSU led 3-0.
Rose tacked on the final goal with 2:37 remaining settling a cleared ball and curling it back into the net from 27 yards away.
MIKE SAALFRANK made three saves as he earned the shutout, his second of the season.
MSU is back in action on Saturday, September 26 hosting Stockton University at MSU Soccer Park beginning at 7:00 pm.
