Volleyball Battles Past Ramapo for Second Straight Win, 3-1

Matlock, LePore Combined for 27 Kills as Red Hawks Top Roadrunners

Montclair, NJ – Junior COURTNEY MATLOCK posted six kills with senior COURTNEY LEPORE added 11 as Montclair State battled its way to a four-set victory over Ramapo College at the Panzer Athletic Center on Tuesday evening.

Libero LILY SCANZILLO registered a match-high 31 digs helping the Red Hawks (9-6, 2-1 NJAC) to their second straight victory as MSU took the match 25-14, 25-21, 15-25, 25-22. Montclair also snapped a two-match losing streak to the Roadrunners, including a five-set loss in the opening round of the NJAC Tournament last season.

Sophomore Larysa Iwaskiw had an impressive double-double of 24 kills along with 18 digs for the Roadrunners (9-5, 2-1 NJAC), who dropped their second straight following a four-match winning streak.

Matlock led the Red Hawks in the first set with six kills as MSU hit .519 while not making an error. Back and forth for the early part of the set, Matlock recorded a pair of kills and NATALIA MAJKUT added another giving Montclair State a 15-10 lead. Scanzillo later served up an ace and two kills by NIKKI SENOPOULOS extended the advantage to 20-14. Senopoulos served out the next five points, which included three kills by Matlock as MSU took the one-set lead with the 25-14 victory.

Ramapo led 6-3 in the second set when a kill by Majkut ignited a six-point run by the Red Hawks Majkut and MADISON MAUTE blocked Iwaskiw for the final point as Montclair led 9-6. The Roadrunners closed within 11-10 however after a service error by Ramapo, MSU got five service points in a row from MELISSA TERPSTRA , the last ending on a kill that grew the MSU lead 18-11. Ramapo rallied with nine of the next 12 point getting within 21-20 however Terpstra had a kill to quell the run and then closed out the set with her four kill giving the Red Hawks a 2-0 advantage in the match.

Iwaskiw was dominating in the third set recording eight kills along with six digs. She had four straight service points that turned a 10-9 deficit for the Roadrunners into a 12-10 lead. After Montclair tied the match at 14-14, Ramapo went ahead on an attack error and then got six straight service points from Kaitlin Mac Iver and two kills from Amanda Rose staking Ramapo to a 21-14 lead. Montclair would get one point back however four consecutive errors closed out the set as the Roadrunners got back into the match with
a 25-15 victory.

The back-and-forth trend continued in the fourth with Ramapo taking a 15-12 lead before Montclair tied it up at 15-15. Iwaskiw had a kill to make the score 19-17 but two consecutive errors by Ramapo squared the match at 19-19. Ramapo would go back in front 22-21 but LePore and KIMBERLY MATLOCK combined on a block to forge the 16th tie of the set.  COURTNEY MATLOCK followed with the kill and Senopoulos served up an ace to bring the Red Hawks to match point which they would capitalize on as LePore nailed down the final point of the set-ending four-point run.

Kim Matlock had 38 assists, seven digs and three blocks for MSU while Maute had four blocks and LePore two. Terpstra finished with seven kills and nine digs while Senopoulos had 13 digs. Freshman ASHLEY GRIFFITH totaled 10 digs.

Rachel Selmore and Emily Guzman had seven kills apiece for Ramapo which got 32 assists and seven digs from Mac Iver. Emily Harris and Kristen Behrens had 15 and 14 digs, respectively.

Montclair State is now off until Tuesday, October 6 when it hosts Rutgers-Camden at the Panzer Athletic Center beginning at 7:00 pm. It will be MSU's Charity Game night as all proceeds from the game will be donated to the Sideout Foundation in the fight against cancer.
