Montclair, NJ – Sophomore forward
KAITLYN STRUSS scored twice as No. 6 Montclair State extended its winning streak to six games with a 4-1 win over Stevens at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.
AMBER HASLETT and
MAURA JOHNSTON each scored for the Red Hawks as Montclair upped its record to 9-1 on the season while knocking off their in-state rivals for the sixth consecutive season. MSU leads the all-time series 7-1.
Emily Stukenborg finished with 14 saves for Stevens, which had its six-game winning streak snapped as the Ducks fell for the first time since a 3-1 setback against St. John Fisher on September 12.
Struss gave Montclair State a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the game. Struss collected a ball inside the circle on the left side and maneuvered her way around Stukenborg before depositing a shot inside the right post for game's first score.
Stevens tied the game a little over two minutes later Dailyn Brook tallied her seventh goal of the season at the 7:03 mark. Off the penalty corner, Cassidy O'Hearn sent a ball from the right side toward the cage that was deflected over to the left post where Brook jammed in the carom for the goal knotting the contest a 1-1.
Stevens used the goal to gain some momentum got two great chances in the 12
th minute to take the lead however Montclair keeper
REBECCA BRATTOLE stopped Victoria Alvarez and then denied Taylor Welch off the rebound keeping the game tied up. Following a Stukenborg save, O'Hearn fired a shot that was knocked away on the backline by
CHARISSE MYERS. Brook sent in a follow that was kicked away by Brattole.
Montclair would gain back the offensive advantage and put forth several attempts in the final five-plus minutes of the half. Stukenborg made three saves and a shot by Struss with 2:42 left hit the post. The Red Hawks got the final scoring chance in the half getting a penalty corner with 23 ticks to go. Off the insert, Roeloffs ripped shot at the top of the circle that Haslett redirected inside the right post as MSU led 2-1 at halftime.
Goalkeepers would rule the early part of the second half as Stukenborg made one early save with Brattole stopping back-to-back shots in the 46
th minute. Alvarez tried to loop a shot over Brattole, who swatted away the attempt. The ball came right to Welch who sent a low shot from the left side that the kicked away by Brattole.
Johnston gave the Red Hawks some breathing room with an unassisted tally at 48:41 with Struss netting her second of the game and eighth of the season with 2:05 remaining off an assist from
JACINTA SANTOS. Stevens tried to close the gap in the closing seconds as Nolie Prouty flicked a shot that got past Brattole however defender
CAMILLE MAIMONE was there for the defensive save.
Brattole finished with eight saves for Montclair State which outshot the Ducks, 21-15 in the game. Each team took nine penalty corners.
Montclair State is scheduled to return to action on Friday, October 2 at home against Ramapo as the Red Hawks open up NJAC play. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
