Goodwin's Golden Goal Lifts No. 10 Men's Soccer Over William Paterson, 2-1

Red Hawks Edge Local Rival Pioneers for Fifth Straight Win

Montclair, NJ – Sophomore KYLE GOODWIN scored with 3:35 left in the first overtime period as No. 10 Montclair State slipped past local rival William Paterson, 2-1 at MSU Soccer Park on Wednesday evening.

Junior forward MIKE OLLA also had a goal for the Red Hawks, who won their fifth straight improving to 11-1 overall while remaining unbeaten in the NJAC at 3-0.

Musa Sackoon had the lone goal for the Pioneers who fell to 3-5-2 overall, 0-2-1 in the conference.

Goodwin would have a hand in both Montclair goals on the evening as he set up Olla for the game's first score at the 16:36 mark. It was Olla's team-leading eighth goal of the season. Sackoon knotted the game up at 21:59 and that's the way the game stood despite Montclair outshooting the Pioneers 26-5 in the game.

William Paterson goalkeeper Mike Villegas was solid making five saves in the second half, including back-to-back stops against Olla and DAMIAN BZIUKIEWICZ in 58th minutes. Montclair's MIKE SAALFRANK made a save against Sackoon three minutes later and the Red Hawks came within inches of taking the lead in the 69th minute when Olla's shot clanged off the cross bar.

In the extra period, the Pioneers got the first crack for the game-winner but Saalfrank denied JP Gonzales with 5:34 remaining. Two minutes later Goodwin collected a ball along the left side from close range and put forth a shot that Villegas got his hands on however the ball squirted through and trickled into the back of the net giving MSU the victory.

Saalfrank stopped three shots for the Red Hawks.

Montclair State heads out on the road on Saturday, October 3. The Red Hawks face off against The College of New Jersey in an NJAC matchup at 1:00 pm.
